died on the highway... turns over but doesnt catch

so im driving along, just crusing in 5th gear, when i feel a dip in power. the car starts bog. the more i try to give it gas the more it bogs down. So when i tried to start it up again it just keeps cranking and never catches.

this has happened before, and i took it to my "mechanic", out of time restrictions, and he replaced a few things. but im probably not taking it back to him. So i really could use some insight. ive replaced. the distb cap and rotor, the alternator, the starter, and the spark plugs recently. i dont mind checking them again.

i really need to get this thing fixed. i have an interview next week and its the first one ive had in 5months....

-Mike

I bet you skipped teeth on your timing belt. Check your timing.

A compression test will take 10min for all cylinders and give you an awesoem idea of what's going on. If you compression is low, it could very well mean timing is off. Check it!

dont you have to be doing something pretty aggressive to skip teeth? also wouldnt it start back up?

i noticed that it is keeping pressure, wouldnt move in gear. but im not sure if thats a good indication

I would start out by checking for spark cause it's easiest. Check each spark plug wire to see if they're all carrying a spark. Then check for fuel pressure in your injectors. If all that is good, then check compression.
