Smoke

I just recently changed the alternator in my 91 NA(5sfe) mr2. It died last Saturday and since it was a long weekend was on jack stands for 3 days waiting for a place to open to rebuild the alternator.

After I got it back in and put back together, I took it off the jack stands and started it up. Started alright but could immediately tell something was wrong. It had a sort of chugging idle and when I gave it some gas it started putting out a lot of smoke from the exhaust and smelled like it was burning oil.

The only issue I knew of before I put it up was that there was a small oil leak that would slowly drip on the exhaust and smoke up after driving for a little bit but never caused any problems.

This car is my everyday driver and I dont even know where to start. Was thinking maybe timing because of the idle but didnt know if that would cause all the smoke too.

Any suggestions would be appreciated seeing as Im too broke to take it to a shop.

do you typically start it daily? did the smoke go away right after start-up?

sounds like the typical valve stem seal leak to me - after it sits for longer and longer more oil slips past the valve stems into the combustion chambers and burns right at start up and then quits.

Yeah I started it everyday.

I gave it a little bit of gas but with how bad it was idling I didnt leave it running for long. Ill try letting it run a little longer today when I get home from work and see if it goes away.

Apparently when I was taking the mounting bracket out it snagged a vacuum hoe and unplugged it X_X plugged in everything is back to normal.
