Temp Gauge (Doesn't Work) Overheated

Hi my temperature gauge doesnt work, its the the way i bought the car and I was driving for a few minutes and I overheated and it now it wont go past 2 or 3000 rpms it just bogs right down...

as for the gauge my engine coolant sensor isnt connected because the guy before me apparently put the wrong one in and its just hanging there, would that cause the gauge not to work?

What should I do for the overheated issue, when I pull it over I hear bubbling come from near the pump next to the fuse box

any ideas?

the sensor that is hanging is this one...

The ECU coolant temp being broken/disconnected can cause the car not to rev past 2K RPMs. The ECU coolant temp sensor ties into other functions of the car, such as air fuel mixtures. It would not cause the gauge not to work.

If you hear bubbling, I would do a coolant flush and bleed the system to purge all the air out.

ive also found out that its is really hard to get all the air out the first time in these mid engine cars.. the first time i flushed mine out i almost over heated it drivin to work later that day. i had burped it until it got all the way up to normal running heat and let it even go for a while after... then i read up in a chiltons manual for all imports 1987-1995 that you have to unhook the hose closest to the filling cap(pictured) IDK why but it worked after i did that. and also my gauge doesnt work either, idky and havent figured it out yet. my thermastat is just fine, infact it is brand new???
