What is the average life span of a 5S-Fe?

Bought my 1993 MR2 thursday and the engine came with 223,xxx miles on it. The previous owner took care of the engine and is still running great and shifts smooth. Im curious how long a well maintained 5S-FE will last. I dont plan to ever race with the current engine or mod it. Also, how hard is it to find a good condition 3S-GTE?

You can find a 3S-GTE no problem.

My engine is at 205,xxx I think. They last forever when maintained well.

the time they last is 100% dependent on maintenance if you do the proper oil and filter changes it should last anothe 200,000 although things do wear out things like timing belt water pump etc do need to be replaced from time to time

Mine is 206,xxx and it's leaking oil in a few places. I'm chalking it up to the P.O. neglecting it though, none of the seals or gaskets were replaced and I doubt they ever did a tune up or checked to see if the oil's been properly changed. It still seems to run smoothly though, they're almost bullet proof (actually, the block is iron and pretty thick, it probably could stand a few rounds)

.22's, hell yeah. anything in my sig, probly not.

But seriously, a well maintained 5sfe will easily roll over 300,000 miles. At some point the valve seals will need to be replaced. this is the cause of the nitorious smoke on start up

this is happening to me...

MidnyteRunner:

there's a few ways you can look at it.

*If you do all the routine repairs to a car, you ultimately are constantly rebuilding the engine, performance will eventually drop(not too bad if you keep up with it though), and you might need to rebuild the engine. but it will still run.

*Run the engine and if something breaks that you don't want to deal with/thrown rod, blown head gasket, then you can swap a street eager new engine in, and start fresh.

but to answer your initial question, when I was looking for a 2, I found a few nearing 300k mi, and they had everything taken care of, it's just more likely to have something else go wrong if you don't know what to watch out for, pretty much everything needs replacing routinely, if you keep up with it, I'm sure you could nail 500k mi+.

Killermiller, you rockin real steel? Nice. I've got some white smoke out of my exhaust that puffs on startup (you can smell bunt oil) and then puffs out gently while the engine is at service temperature. I dunno if I should try to fix the engine or if it has enough life to last through the winter and spring when I can hopefully replace it with a GR2 or something

2GR you mean?

My engine occasionally puffs white on start up, but never when it's at service temp.

Yes those are real, yes they are mine, and no thats not all of em. I didnt give myself the name killermiller.

If you are getting smoke beyond start up, the seals are totaly fried. Maybe something else also.

My old MR2's engine was a junk yard motor when I bought it, after I blew the engine I had traced down were it came from it was pulled from a Camry that had 398K on it.

Correct the engine was already in it when i bought it, basically 2 owners before me had a 5SFTE setup on the original motor and he blew it up and just ran to the junk yard picked up the engine and slapped it in a sold it to the previous owner.

After I blew it up i decided to trace down where the engine came from. and found out, decided to buy a reman 5S and turbo that since the mileage was alittle to high for me LOL.
