5sfe-5sfe

I had long been thinking about wether or not to do a 3sgte swap, but when my motor suddenly died sooner than I expected and I found a 5sfe for cheap, I'm just putting a stock 5sfe back in the car.
So my question is what should I do before I put the new motor in?

I've thought of some of the obvious to do while the engine is out like new timing belt and water pump. Also I thought about using the alternator and ac from my car because I know they are already working to par. Pretty much everything is good on my last motor except the internals, so what should I keep, toss, or swap to the 5sfe before I put it in?

Thanks.

Oh- I've also heard about the hose from hell. I'm already planning on taking care of that one.

5sfe doesn't have a hose from hell, you should replace the oil pump and the front main seals while your at it

I would replace any seals/gaskets that may be leaking obviously and any others that you cant get to with the motor in the car. Just insurance I guess. Anytime I have a motor out I try to replace any seals and gaskets I can, money providing. Rather replace them and not need it then have to do it with the motor in the vehicle.

I just finished an entire rebuild in the car. From new pistons and everything up without ever removing the block or tranny.

I would replace all gaskets and seals, and make sure that thing is as clean as Jay Leno's garage. clean out your engine bay, paint some engine goodies in POR 15, and then drop the sucker in!

I just got the newer 5sfe in! Compression test shows 200 across the board! Runs amazing. Replaced some seals, put in a little newer clutch. New water pump and timing belt. I'm very impressed with its performance.
My old 5 must have sucked from the moment I bought it because this one seems extremely more powerful.
I'm debating where to go from here. I've read the forums about advancing the timing and changing the cams, but I'm starting to think the cams have been changed in this motor already. I know nothing about it, except it pulls hard and has good compression. Is there a sticky I havn't found about cam identification or something?

I don't think you did. without setting the cams side by side you would have to measure out the size of them to get a decent reading.

[Edit] Getting power from a 5SFE without forced induction is the bomb!

neat to hear that it is running strong! I may be the next one to do this swap (if you can really call it that). I'm probably doing to use stronger internals and cams, just check my sig out.

Yeah I've been reading that one and re reading it. I'm just thinking about buying cams, but I don't want to buy cams if the car already has them if you see what I mean.

It has greddy exhaust, but not headers (don't want it too much louder), and some random intake kit.
So the next step up is electronics and stuff?
I mean without getting deep into the motor. Not quite ready to do that.

I would say after you do the basic cleaning and Header, Intake, Exhaust. weight reduction in wheels would be a decent investment. but without breaking into the engine/transmission electronics and dyno time seem to be our best investment. I would also suggest light weight flywheel/performance clutch for additional gain from ur new clean engine. that would have been an easier thing with the whole thing out though...

Interesting. I've thought about it. The rims on it are pretty light as is. They are some generic brand but don't look to bad.

So dyno tuning is a good next step to see where its at?

I definitely don't hate my 5S. It seems a lot more potent than my old Eclipse 4G63 N/A. Which is weird, since the 2 and the DSM have many similar numbers . . . But the DSM's been parked a while, and it was getting weak before that, lol. Mebbe I've just forgotten . . .

But I digress . . .

I think I want to do a 1MZ swap, but it just seems like a waste to pull such a nice engine.

Thats been my thought. I think a v6 is in my future too if I decide to keep the mr2 for a more lengthy period of time. But it feels weird pulling out a perfect motor for something else...
