Alright, so I'm thinking about buying another MR2
The most recent MR2 i bought had 222k miles on it, but everything was in good shape. The particular MR2 I am thinking about buying has 220k miles on it. I could have sworn i saw a sticky somewhere that listed a variety of different things to check for when buying an MR2, but, come to think of it, I believe it was in the MKI section. Anyway, what are a few things i should take particular notice into when buying this on? I know it seems rather odd that I have owned one before, but I don't NEED this car so I would really like to avoid getting myself caught up in something that is unnecessary.
I'm not the smartest guy when it comes to cars, but the first few things i would check would be oil leaks, AC, interior/exterior faults, ask about timing belt (I am not sure how to tell if it is bad or going bad), and obviously test drive it to see how it runs. I am mainly looking for things to check that will assure me that the engine is not going to die within a month of me getting it if I choose to buy it. All help is appreciated; hopefully there will not be much flaming ahah, I'm just a teenager that loves MR2's and all I can do is learn. EDIT: also, it is a 93 if that helps. |

I would say check for overheating issues on top of the rest. Idle as well should be on the list of things to look at.

I've got a 2.2 3SFE with 155k and I've discovered that this particular engine has a problem with vavle seals, which is a fairly costly replacement.

I recently bought my '2 with just over 220k on it, and was a bit iffy about the condition. Of course, being as old as they are, a lot of them have been messed with, ghetto rigged, etc.
Your best bet, if you are really serious about buying it, is to call your local toyota dealer and ask for them to do a full inspection on the car (takes about 2 hours, costs $90-$110, and is the same as the certified pre-owned inspection). They give you a full list of anything and everything that is wrong with it and may or may not need to be replaced. That's what I did, and im glad i did, so i dont have to wonder about what the problem is if i see a drop of oil on the ground, or if something makes a weird sound, or if the ac isnt working, etc etc. |
