buying my first 2 need help!

hi, im new to the mr2's and im going to buy one next weekend if everything goes to plan. my question's are it has 125,xxx and what is going to start brakeing? timing belt and pump was done at 100k, battery and brakes are 2 years old, ebrake cable is broken and trunk release cable to. Would the suspension have to be changed soon or any other things? also is it ok that their is oil on the top of the motor? is it normal? the guy said he changes his own oil so is it a spill or should i look out for something?

how the hell do you not change brakes in 2 yrs. lol... but look for rust, body damage, oil leaking, over heating, idling, and lag in car, and ask if he knows compression of car.

[QUOTE=mrjimmyx;503016]How the hell do you not change brakes in 2 yrs? lol...[QUOTE]

I fixed your punctuation and it's only about 7,500 miles a year average on that car. That is that many and if you dont ride the brakes, they'll last.

I would ask for a compression test to be done. If he doesnt have the gauge, go to harbor freight and pick one up. They are like $20 and a decent thing to have laying around. Ask the questions to the guy. Ask if he spilled the oil or if it's leaking. I dont know much about mk2's but just ask the basic questions. Test drive it to make sure it feels good. Make sure there arent any clunks or knocks and make sure the clutch is tight. Good luck with the car if you decide to get it.

the NA uses the same engine as the Camry, pretty damn bulletproof so long as there is oil in it and its not overheated. Should be just routine maintenance for quite a while if the car was not abused

This is common with all used cars especially 18 yr old ones. If you look at any used car you are bound to find oil on the exterior of the engine block. The car does not leak any oil and I have never found oil on any of the 4 spark plugs and all four cylinders hold a consistent pressure.

thats what he told me, he did a vid of a cold start up and starts good but il have to see in person

redo the test. also i'd wipe up the oil with something so you can make sure he isn't bs'in you. i am not sayin all people are lien but if you assume he is, and your right, you'll save a ton of money. if your wrong, you might miss out on a deal but its def better that way.

$4,800 for a non-turbo seems a liitle steep, unless the body and interior are in excellent condition. I don't know what the car looks like since you didn't post any addition photos. If you can post some more photos we'll all point out a few things I'm sure.

based on what you described, with the lack of pics, i'd walk. there are plenty of mk2's for less then that price.

any oil ever on the exterior of the motor is expected, but not "normal". check around the valve cover for the gasket leaking. the oil pressure sensor (located on the top driver's side of the valve cover) is also prone to leaking i believe. and also the distributor o-ring is a common leak spot. when you test drive the car, check for wobbling of the steering wheel in turns as it could need new tie rods and ball joints with that many miles if the owner has not changed them already. if the car has been well maintained, you shouldn't have too much to worry about... just normal wear and tear really. i reccomend that if you get the car, that you learn to do a lot of the maintenance yourself, because a lot of places will try to screw you for working on these things. good luck with gettin the car

lol i just viewed the engine pics... it actually does look like an oil spill. but still always good to check for leaks

Even without seeing pictures of the rest of the car thing isn't worth over 4k....

Dosent look that well kept....you can tell a lot about a car/owner when you look at the engine bay. Just something to think about.

It would be a good Idea to post some pics for us, 4800 is a high price for an MR-2 with those issues.

Honestly I would pay 5,000 for a 91 NA if it near flawless, and clean. I Paid 9,000 for my 91 Turbo, but it was in Near flawless condition, and I bought mine 10 years ago to LOL

Good Luck bro,
