I had an '04 G35 Coupe (auto); My only mods were a Motordyne Plenum spacer, and Z Tube w/ JWT Popcharger. I have an aquaintance that has a 91 MR2 w/ a Gen 2 3sgte and some ebay intake and headers... He could barely hang with my G35...
That being said, I sold my G35 and kept my Mr2... I'm not knocking the MR2, I'm just saying that drag racing a G35 isn't in your best interest unless you plan on dumping some $$$ into your 2. |

I didn't realize that you had so much time before the race, and I also didn't bother to read everyone elses response befor posting the same thing that had been said four times.
I remeber reading some import magazine five or six years ago and there was an article about a guy who had written in asking a question similar to yours. He had a stipulation though that no money could be spent on the project. He was driving a new sentra if I remeber correctly. The magazine just stripped to whole car down to nothing and it improved the 1/4 mile time by a little over two seconds. Obvoisly you don't want to show up to the race looking like an idiot so that really isn't an option for you. Do take out the spare and passenger seat though. Also, practicing your launch and running a 90% empty tank are great ideas. Now, as for cheap things you can do over the next month to give you and edge. Fabricate a straight pipe exhaust to eliminate your cat and muffler. Of course you only want to run that on race day. Smaller and lighter wheel will also give you a gearing advantage. You can calculate your wheel size to give you the top of the rev range in 5th gear as you cross the finish line (might actually have to fourth gear). Also, you don't want to rule out a light shot of nitrous. Even a 20 shot will give you a big advantage. |

Accourding to the TODA Racing website, you can use any of their cams on the factory spring in the 2nd gen 3s..... That's a big cost advantage for a big cam upgrade compared to someone who has the dig deeper into the valvetrain ..... you would probably enjoy having them even after the race.

Some Skills
|
Ok listen up, you can do this easily here is what you have to do first.
1.) Learn to drive, you do NOT dump the clutch, you SLIP the clutch during a launch. You must practice this before hand!!! Try reving to 4k, slipping the clutch, keeping the gas constant the whole time and once you stop spinning (you should barely spin) then floor the gas. This is the single most important thing you can do to improve your time. 2.) Free mods - Weight Reduction Remove your spare tire, trunk carpet liner, interior fire wall carpet behind the seats, and if the track allows it, your passenger seat (4 bolts holding it down, 2 infront, 2 inback, slide the seat to get access. All of those items take about 5 minutes to remove and 5 minutes to re-install and will save a significant portion of weight. Keep in mind that the approximate rule is every 100 lbs saved improves your time by .1 seconds. All of these items will remove approximately 150 lbs of weight = very good. 3.) When your at the track, run with 1/4 gas, no more. More gas = more weight. 4.) If you have a $20 timing gun you can advance your timing to 15-17 deg and have a little more midrange pep. Search for how to do this but it is really easy, just use the gun to find your timing, loosen the 2x bolts holding the distributor, and rotate it to adjust the timing. If you do these things and your friend can't drive you should win. Also, street tires shouldn't need to do a burnout before so don't worry about that. |

No remotely stock N/A MR2 will ever beat a G35, unless you are completely built on nitrous and he's stock, running ****ty and a bad driver. Sorry, won't happen.

Gunna have to disagree with ya, I have seen a 5s with headers, exhaust, intake and stage 2 clutch, launch on a 350z and the 350z didnt catch him till about the top of 4th.The z driver wasnt a bad driver, the two just made a monstrous jump on the light. Trust me, if the OP can learn to hook well, He may have a chance. A G35 won't hook like a two and the weight difference will help. The G35 doesnt have that much power over the Two let alone already 900lbs heavier. |

I'm running a non RevUp VQ with all the bolt-ons and no tuning. With tuning some have seen upper 250'swhp. The 5SFE or 3SGE may do well off the line, but they will suffer past 80mph. |

Do some research? Well lets see, when I'm trying to figure out how to modify my G35 and get the best bang for the buck one would think I would do some research considering parts aren't cheap for these cars. I did plenty of research and would be happy to enlighten you, but since you don't own a G its pointless. My statement still stands. 0-60 goes to the MR2....60+ the G will overtake So stop taking **** personal and being a baby. Man up and debate with good arguments. |

You can't argue with dyno proof. I have seen a lightly modded G35 get taken by a stock 2nd gen 3sgte, the OP may stand a chance.
But yes, after 60 who knows. Last edited by mattdouken; 11-22-2009 at 03:13 AM.. |

Honestly I think My car will do good even 60+ on a G35 I kinda messed around with a 350z on highway with my 300pnd cousin in my car. yeah I loose but it wont be that bad if its stock. I learned how to slip the clutch today. 4700 will be my launch point in 1st gear. But yeah, when we do race I guess this will settle your guys argument about a G35 and the deuce. Ill make sure to have a video camera.

remove anything that can be put on after the race.... put some headers on that thing... EMS headers are good but wont bolt on to a 3rd gen... so take your stock headers with the after market ones and have them cut the flange off the stock ones and cut the after market flange, the weld the 3rd gen flange on... best bang for your buck.... get a fuel pressure regulator- put pressure around 30psi.. get afc, or some type of basic piggy back and go get it tuned... 3rd gens come with decent cam profiles so and decent compression so honestly a MSD btm and a 65 shot of nitrous can easily be handled by it... you can rape his g35 trust me.. ive done it with my second gen and my boys starlet with a 3rd gen we have beat 350z's g35's s2's hatches and coupes with h22's k20s and much much more..... you gotta learn your shift points bro.... in the end it comes down to the driver....
