Feels like motor is twisting?

Ok guys i need some help. I'm not really sure if it's normal or not. But my mr2 feels like the motor twisting or something like that. For example, when i pick my brother up from school, i'll be in first gear behind someone and if i let off the gas it slows down rather fast and not very smooth. And when i barely give it gas to speed up, it then feels like there is some sort of play in the rear end. Kind of like a go-kart with shocks in the back, if you ever drove one. Just feels like the back end picks up. I have TEIN adjustable shocks, so i know it's not the shocks being soft, cause they are really stiff. So what would cause something like this? I'm trying to explain it the best i can. Thanks for any kind of help.

+1

if it's as bad as you say then i think just by looking at them you should be able to tell if they are bad.

Well, letting off the gas in 1st gear isn't going to be smooth at all because of the amount of engine braking you're getting. 1st gear is the strongest (as in shortest) gear in the box, so naturally, the engine will slow the car down rather suddenly as the vacuum (and friction) within the engine (aka 'engine braking') is quite powerful, and since you're in the shortest possible gear, it has the worst effect possible on the car.

You should use 1st gear just to get moving, after that, if you need to make throttle adjustments, use 2nd gear.

I don't recommend replacing the front and rear motor mounts with the OEM specification, as those will just tear (been there, done that). Get some polyurethane inserts. They'll transmit a little more vibration through the chassis, but the engine won't move nearly as much.

my 85 feels the same way; fortunately I'm never in bumper to bumper traffic... if I was, I'd have a broken neck by now from all the jerking.
Let me know if the motor mounts do it for you. Personally, I'd like to reduce the amount of vibration, even if it means other problems... but this one has bothered me for some time. It feels the same way in second, between 1.5 and 2.5k rpm

Ok, well my dad and i went outside and checked it out. And when reved the motor while the breaks was applied, the motor did in fact twist, from front to back, not side to side. Would the twisting get the bucking when the gas is applied and released at low rpm? Even if im in 2nd or 3rd, if i let off the gas on a very very slight decline i will get bucking. But it's not major.

rock the engine back and forth by hand and see how much play there is but it definetly sounds like bad mounts and I agree with everyone that you should get the poly inserts. It will increase vibration a little but you will notice a big difference in the way the car drives. There are many different places to get them from and brands as well but when I got mine I ordered them from twosrus.

I tried to move it with my hand, But it wouldn't even budge. The poly inserts would be a nice to get regardless though, i bet.

Our engines will rock back and forth under power because they're transversely mounted. If the engine rocks side to side, then there are some serious problems.

I just think it's because of the gearing like Jason said. 1st gear is very short and when you suddenly get off the gas, it'll slow down and feel rough. Either a) drive like you should and stay in second gear, or b) become smooth with the clutch. By that I mean that when you let off the gas in 1st, put in the clutch.

Yah i was thinking it was the gearing. But i just thought id ask to make sure. I guess i will just let the clutch slip a bit when i'm in constant stop and go. That's only when i pick up my brother from school though. Which isn't very often.

Don't just slip the clutch, you'll burn it way they hell up if you're in stop and go traffic on a regular basis. Completely push in the clutch.

I bet that would really help out while keeping the vibrations down.

No, solid motor mounts will increase vibrations somewhat.
