Well I plan on changing the belt in on the passenger side (seen from the top... maybe a/c belt) and the alternator belt sometime next week. While I am changing the alt belt I am going to have the alt rebuilt because it whines. Any suggestions or hints for the upcoming project. I am totally new at work on the mr2 mkII's. I have heard that belt changing take anywhere from an 30 minutes to hours. Any helpful info would be appreciate... oh by the wat 92 N/A

The hardest part of that project is going to be getting the alternator out. You can accomplish this by one of two ways.
1. take belts off, remove alternator and let it rest on the exhaust/crossmember then take off the bracket and fiddle the alternator through the top. It is a really really tight fit and can be quite challenging. 2. Drop the crossmember off then remove the alternator and drop it through the bottom. I have used method 1 a couple of times and can tell you that it's a royal pita. The only reason I do it is because my crossmember got dented by the PO and replacing the trailing arm is even harder.

Just replaced my alternator a few weeks ago, no matter how you do it, it is a PITA, i just dropped the exhaust (not the crossmember!)OMG! It was a tight fit but was still able to do it in less than two hours.......(5SFE)
As for the squeaky belt I've been told that the main pulley gets rusty and cause premature wear and hence the Unbearable squeal......however i don't think many people want to drop their engine to change that....play with tension and hope for the best...... |

Mine squeeks after an automatic car wash, or heavy heavy rain for a long period. It'll squeek for like 60sec, then go away. If I wash her by hand, or the rain is just light, she never ever squeeks. I think you're ok if it just does it when it's wet. Just make sure there isn't a problem w/ it getting wet.
