Question 5sfe glass half full

now that I've busted my postin' cherry.

I wanted to post my thoughts on the 5sfe. The performance potential seems pretty weak.

However, and correct me if I'm wrong

-block is good

-crank is good

-newer oil pump can be fitted

-boost (whether turbo or supercharger) will overcome weak valve lift

-eagle has a set of h-beams connecting rodsfor around 250$ on nopi.com

-pistons from another engine may work (doesn't even have to be toyota)

I live in las vegas. I am planning a backyard turbo setup. I have a spare 5sfe motor. I am not going to spend more than $500. I have a two turbos in the garage that should be about the right size. I got a t3 off a saab and a ihi off of a 626.

I am thinking about water injection, biggest intercooler I can fit/find, and extra oil cooling.

I am interested in a 3s head swap. I also would like to know about this batch-fire crap. Can I swap to 93-up obd 1 computer? Could I use a mr2turbo computer? if yes which one is best for this type of set up?

I can answer some:

Pistons and rods are pretty tough (rods more so) it’s just that you need to make sure that its tuned PERFECT No detonation and it will handle a basic turbo setup as you want.

Water injection is good to keep detonation under wraps, intercooler is good for obvious reasons, i see lots of cheap 5s turbo setups using the stock 3s intercooler too.

I don’t know about the 3s head swap that costs more then you think....

Batch fire is when all 4 injectors fire at the same time...its more so a waste of fuel and inefficient but still works...They fire all injectors in a batch at the same time for each injection event. It will not pulse a batch of four injectors four times for each combustion cycle, but once. The fuel behind closed intake valves will sit there until the valve opens. Some fuel will be wasted during overlap.

The only way to get around this is going standalone

Thanks for the advice. I don't need a crapload of power. I will probably end up with a swap but I want to turbo the 2.2 just for fun.

I don't understand why I would need a standalone to have regular multiport injection.

I know this is a toyota and not a honda. but I have a crx and it was a tbi dx model, I then made it mpfi, and then mpfi w/vtec and obd1 95 computer

Why couldn't I do this with an mr2. I can't swap the ecu and make an adapter harness?

I can't live w'batch fire. I make batches of cookies. Hell I could even make batches of women. but, I dont need any crack whore batches of fuel sprays!!

might as well get some webers!!!

First off take the whole "I had a honda and i could do this and this" idea and throw it out the window....

Its POSSIBLE but not that easy...
Here is more info if you want to turbo

he has lots of great points and is the reason why I have faith in the 5s and am working on building parts for people who own them.

we already have multiport injection.. hense the 4 injectors, in multiple ports

a 3sge headswap isnt a headswap, its a full motor swap plus a stroker setup. it just happens that you dont have to swap engine blocks out of the car (petty difference). you essentially have to do EVERYTHING for a complete 3sge swap, plus more for the stroker setup.

Thumbs up

Thanks wease 4 the link, I found it very informative.

I like the injector, map sensor, and btm idea

Seriously though f*** batch fire!

It has nothing to do with hondas. An ecu swap should be an ecu swap, right?
-you mount the new ecu and hook up everything it had in the original car

redline is the same? cams are comparable?

knock sensor can be added. I think the hardest part would be a change in sending units for ecu signal and speedo and gauges. Distrubutor swap maybe.

I would much rather have a stock ecu that would run perfectly than a standalone that will get close.

I don't really understand what Tomsmr2 means about a engine swap. Do you mean that pistons wil crash into head or valves? could reliefs be cut? Can 3s rods be used?

Thanks 4 all the advice

ps. it might be multiport but it is not used how it should be. MPFI is made to squirt fuel into the cylinders that need it! not carpet bomb the valves with a bunch of fuel.

im saying you might as well install the whole 3sge and be done with it..

a lot of people think they can "shortcut" by just installing the head. its actually MORE work to install a 3sge head onto a 5sfe block (and more expensive) than it is to just install the entire 3sge setup.
