Hey guys I just bought my 93' MR2 N/A last month and I absolutely love it. I had previously owned two Nissan Z N/A's 93 and 92 but had to sell them for financial reasons. I was actually looking for another Z but when I saw the MR2 I just had to get it
I have a lot of fun driving it and everywhere I go heads are turning and people are trying to buy it of me! (Not a lot of well taken care MR2's are around here) But that is not happening because Im planning on keeping it for a while. Now I've read a few threads on people arguing about why not just swap into a 3SGTE if more power is desired and that 5SFE's are crap. I like the engine just fine but would like to get some more HP out of it with mods that I can install myself not just for the power but so that I can learn more about the engine and the car. Im asking for your help in pointing me into the right direction to what mods are a good idea. I already installed a performance dual exhaust because the single that it came with was a poor custom made one. I bought the Weapon R Secret Weapon Intake but it doesn't fit so I've had it in my trunk for weeks trying to figure out how to make it fit. If anyone knows how to please help me out or Im thinking about buying another one that I found. Is the TOms Intake a good decision? A buddy of mine is also selling an HKS intake for the N/A that was discontinued but need a 90 degree elbow coupling because his stock intake pipe is from a 92 N/A that already has a 90 degree part of the pipe. I've been researching headers and the two that seem like are a good product are the SSAutochrome ones and OBX. What do you guys recommend?? I would really appreciate you guys advice to help me make my car more fun to drive and work on. Thanks Manny |

First off, welcome to the board. Always good to see new MR2 owners.
Secondly, good choice on the '93 NA. I've got one myself and love it to death. Thirdly, about the mods, you're pointing in the right direction, and it looks like you've done a fair ammount of research. So props for that. The Toms intake is as good as any for the 5S, some would argue the best. I've also heard other people having fitment issues with the Weapon R Secret Weapon intake, so you might be better off ditching it. I've got the HKS intake and it fit my '93 motor and my new '94 motor just fine, and aside from the craptastic HKS filter on it, I love it. You're heading in the right direction on headers too. Go sign up for your local autox and start learning how to drive the car. I find it's the best cure for wanting to go fast in a straight line. Ends up saving me money and letting me have a ton of fun! |

putting a k&n filter on the stock tubeing is also an option. And about the headers, i noticed you are in california, how can we californians use the hearers and still pass emmisions without cheating our way through, our environment doesnt need the polution either, i think its time we start getting responsible. Im not trying to jack the thread, but this might be something you want to keep in mind also

Welcome For first offs, Sweet you have owned some Z''s, I Had a convertible 93' myself
If your looking for power the 3s-gte is the way to go, unlike your Z's its basically an entire diffrent engine, n/a and turbo. So it all depends on what you really want ![]() |

Congratulations on your new car.
You may never sell it. Unless you are upgrading to a better MR2. The novelty of the car has wore off for me. I've have driven the same MR2 for almost 5 years. I drive in the city; hours on end, every day. Every once in a while I drive a SUV and I think: "Man, This POS sucks; I wish I was in the two." Do not buy anything for the 5sfe. Don't even bother with the headers. What is the point, man? Don't waste your money. If you want to learn about the engine and the car; then buy a 3sgte. You will learn about the good engine and the car at the same time. You do not have thousands of dollars to waste on 40 hp and a brief overview on how to wrench a few things. Do not worry about power at all if you are not going to get a new engine. Focus on suspension upgrades and minor improvements like fog lamps. Quote:

People like you make me want to shoot myself... STAY OUT OF THE NA SECTION! Pointless bull****, he said he likes the 5S and he wants a few more HP, not DOUBLE the HP. He has already done the research (many props my man!) and is on the right path looking for better direction. Telling him to swap is a cop out. [\rant] As for the OP, SSautochrome just put out a newish header I believe, TRD-CEO on the board is testing it currently. The design appears nice and improved so after he gets it all dynoed and looked at, I'd say that is your best bet. I've heard the TOMs intake is the best, but I'm drivin around with just a K&N filter on the stock tube and it works just fine. Is it the weapon R for an Integra? Welcome to the board, and enjoy your 5S! |

Well it looks like im heading in the right direction thanks guy.
Im gonna go with the TOms Intake if my buddy has not yet sold the HKS one but where can I buy the TOms and pay with credit card?? I tried signing up for a PayPal account to start buying mods for my 2 but today I received an email telling me that it was denied because my name matched in the Office of Foreign Assets Control Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list and I didnt know what the hell that was until I researched it and guess who is part of the list?? Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein What the ****?? I aint no terrorist and damn sure not a national. Im a ****** U.S. Citizen damn it. Anyways now I have to wait to get that cleared up so that I can use PayPal.Yup Im gonna go with the SSautochrome headers once TRD-CEO finishes testing them. Im happy with my 5S and maybe in the future I'll swap to a 3S if I have the money. Quote:

What I said was not pointless bull****, and the point is glaringly obvious. You know it, and everyone else knows it. Why are you so hopelessly committed to defending the pathetic 5s? Ask yourself; What the point of upgrading a 5s with headers? You will gain a few horse power on the dyno, if at all? What is the ultimate purpose? You gain 2 horsepower and it has no effect on your quarter mile time. You gain a shiny new header you can show off and you lost a few hundred dollars. No one cares if you car has a new header. They just look at your car and the 16 second time and shake their heads. You do not care about performance. You only care about Bling. Why else would you buy headers if the car is never going to manage over 150hp with basic bolt on ****. The car is still slow no matter what you do. |

Pathetic? The 5S is far from pathetic. Obviously you have not done any research. From a header, you actually gain 9 whp and 4 ft/lbs, not 2. Why that may not be a lot to you, $125 for 9whp is not bad. That is just one mod. You seem to be narrow minded because of the fact you are only discussing the header. You dont seem to realize either that some people prefer the NA. "You only care about the bling" is a very ignorant thing to say. Again, you have obviously not done any research. There are several devoted 5S drivers looking to improve their engine...not the "bling" factor. If we cared about bling, we'd do the swap. The ultimate purpose is to gain that little extra oomph. I don't care if I have 200 whp or whatever turbo puts down, I just want a LITTLE bit extra. And since this thread is about the 5S and gaining that little extra, how about you just stop chiming in with your worthless "swap this, swap that" POINTLESS BULL****. ![]() |

+2 Even though I have a turbo, sometimes I dont want to worry about waiting for my car to turn of or on to warm up, etc. Ya i enjoy my turbo but, where am I now? Im at my friends house working on it because the turbo went bad! And I didnt even do it
THe merits of an n/a for dd is more + than a turbo. |
