5SFE rebuild
I just picked up a second 5SFE for $200 that I am going to strip down, and rebuild from the ground up. First, what piston rings do you guys recommend? I need something that will take abuse, but not wear on anything since I will be putting miles on the car. Second, are the stock connecting rods durable enough for hard racing?
While I am rebuilding the block, I am going to go get the head shaved down a bit and a good P&P, but I have yet to figure out what I'm doing for cams, so I could use some input there as well. Thanks |

I'd go stock everything if you're only going to P&P and get some cams/intake/exhaust.
Stock will hold up very nicely for quite some time. However, if I might suggest something, I'd suggesting buying '98+ conrods, or get some aftermarket ones. It is my personal theory that the conrods were poorly designed on earlier 5SFEs, and that is why they develop knock as often as they do (Albeit usualyl at higher mileage) I think sludge gets into the oiling ports and makes them much smaller, hence starving the conrod bearings of oil. If you look at the Toyota parts, the conrods change in '98 I think it is. Also, get a '98+ 5SFE oil pump. Higher flow, so even less of a chance of starving the motor of oil. Of course, if you're running synthetic oils from the start, which I assume you would, sludge probably wouldn't be much of a problem and you could probably run whatever conrods you wanted. |

I was planning on running royal purple everything after the engine and tranny get a rebuild. Of course, I think I might do rods and pump just in case I decide to go back and do further building later.
