Ey whats up fellas? I am new here and this is my first thread. I am currently driving my 91 NA 5sfe With Hotshot Headers and a dual exhaust. I was just wondering is there were any inexpensive mods that i could do to make my car go faster. I have allready Sea Foamed the vacum line and did the oil change to full synthetic. MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! But i feel that i need an intake system of some sort.. correct me if i'm wrong. I AM NOT a mechanic but i do understand a thing or two bout my car.
If someone knows of a great mod that would give my car more power and won't break my checking account.PLEASE let me know. NO I DO NOT HAVE MONEY FOR A TURBOCHARGER!!! LOL!! that would be awesome though. Oh yea and sometimes my car idels kinda funny, just recently HELP |

The best performance upgrade for an NA for $20... but you get your $20 back in the end.
Take about $20 worth of quarters out of your piggy bank. and place them all in a sock (long sock), and tie a knot to hold them at the end of the sock. Grasp the sock firmly from the end. Go to one of those car shows at night. Hit an owner of a turbo over the head with the sock full of quarters. Take his car. When you get home put your quarters back in your piggy bank to save for bail money when they find his car in your driveway. Or just search ebay for an intake. There really isn't much for the US na motor that isn't expensive. Don't spend too much money on it though, the cheapest route to decent power is through a turbo swap. Some people will argue that, but meh that's my opinion. I like the sock Idea.. |

hey i used to have a 90 celica gts w/ the 5sfe, and you can take the 3s-ge head, cams, fuel rails, etc(whole top of the motor) and its bolts directly on... you will see about 20hp or so depending on how you tune it, about $200 if you know how to do everything
you can do the same w/ the 3sgte and see close to 100hp extra...not very smart or reliable!!! |

id pick the stock air box.. when the cars stock, an intakes fine.. when you get headers and an exhaust on, i think it drones way too damn much. sure its a couple less hp, but who cares. for the track i just unhook the hose from the box and suck air out of the engine lid vent. takes 3 seconds and you get all the gains from an intake, rehook the box up for the drive home and dont get a headache from the drone.
cams will change your gas economy.. they're marginally more work than a timing belt job. anyone with a reasonable amount of automotive skills could do it in a day. add in a few hours for reshimming. cars are an expensive hobby. when you want to get serious and start spending your money on things that actually make a real difference, you'll find out its not cheap, and sometimes its not easy. if you buy flashy cheap parts, you just end up with a loud car thats really not faster than it was before. there comes a time when you have to ask yourself what you really want from your money and your car. |

I have a Weapon-R Intake for sale. It needs a filter you can buy for under $20. I had Hot-Shot Headers installed w/ the intake and I could tell a big diffrence in power. I have a ton of other 5SFE parts that Ive had made or ordered brand new. Check out my thread in the Parts Department link off the main Forum Page. And like TomsMR2 quoted "CARS ARE AN EXPENSIVE HOBBY" he's 100% right!

A good idea (before you buy a bunch of parts) is to come up with a plan.
I know it sounds lame, but it's essential if you want to get the most out of your money. Do some research on what kind of power people are making then look at the parts and work they needed to get there. With a bit of practice you should be able to start figuring out roughly how much it cost them - then add about 50% more for all the small stuff they forget to add in - really. The research (only use data from people who have running, proven cars) will also show you what you can typically expect from a given set-up. Under ideal circumstances better outcomes might be possibile, but plan on similiar results to the examples given. Once you have all that, then you can start to compare you budget to your HP goals, and where they cross you have a goal. Once you have that then look for the parts, work and tuning you will need to arrive there. You can start by following their builds, and then adjust them as needed. You can also start to identify what's "want" (or bling) from what's needed. "I want" parts aren't bad, just be aware that you are choosing to spend the money on that vs. something else - all up to you. Don't forget to include the "other" stuff as well - wheels, tires, suspension, alignment, paint touch-up, etc. If you plan carefully enough and stick to the plan, you can end up with a very sharp car without wasing money on stuff you never und up using - or just toss into the garage later. ymmv.
