Costs for repairs??
just got my mr2 not to long ago and went to a mechanic to get my engine checked for oil leaks and found that the head gasket needs to be replaced, oil leaks coming from the timing cover, and to change the valve cover. the whole repair will cost about $1900!!! how much do these repairs usual cost? any one know a good mechanic or garage in the los angeles, cali area? thanks all!!

my shop would charge 3K, easily, for those repairs.

1900 is a good price. They will have to drop the engine.
I'll be looking at alteast that when I put mine in the shop real soon for all belt changes, clutch, and to fix oil leaks. I'm leaking oil from the oil pan (did this myself earlier but still have a leak and said screw it with the other work i have to have done), around the oil pump, around the intake manifold. |

The only thing I'd be skeptical of is how they are certain it's the head gasket. Oil from the valve cover area doesn't necessarily mean it's a head gasket problem.

I wonder if they're just assuming it's the head gasket because of the infamous valve stem seal leaks. The smoke at startup could be confused with a head gasket leak. Sometimes it's more of a whitish color than the typical oil burning blue. The smell should give it away though, but I guess.
