Clutch Engaged Engine runs fine, disengaged engine dies
Ok here is my story - Car was great 6 weeks ago no problems at all, then an e-brake cable froze so I decided to redo the entire brake system, with work and other things it took about 6 weeks to get done.
Now I start the car, when it's cold it idles high (1400) as it's supposed to and there are no isses at all. once it get warmed up, if you disengage the clutch it dies, if you leave the clutch in and put the trans in Neutral it will idle at 800 just fine, but the minute you push the clutch in it dies. Will restart just fine as well. MY car is a 91 NA with a 94 3SGE engine in it. any thoughts appreciated, all vacuum lines were checked. |

theres probably some odd short in your clutch pedal switch, how do you get the car started if it wont run with the clutch in?(you need the clutch in for the starter to work)

Push in the clutch it will start as long as you give it gas, just won't stay running at idle if the clutch is in. Let the clutch out with the car in neutral and it will idle fine, but even with the car in neutral if you push the clutch in the car dies. Tried starting it with the clutch out, will not start so the Clutch switch is working correctly.

UPDATE! - The garage says my throwout bearing is bad? Any thoughts from anyone on if they feel this is a feasible problem to cause this? All sensors were checked and all of them tested fine, most were tested by swapping them out with known good ones. No Vacuum leaks were found and the raw data from the ECU showed all signals coming in correctly.

And shouldn't that make like a ton of noise? there is no real noticable noise comimg from it at all, thats what makes this so weird.

How does it stall out? Just shut off? or stumble then eventually die?
ALso have you tried to give it a bit of gas to revi t up to say 1000rpm (in N) and hold it there while you push the clutch in...does the car still stall? |

When you put the clutch in the car idles just drops all the way down and the car dies. if you let the car in neutral with the clutch out it idles fine.
How Toyota decided it was the Throwout bearing was they disabled the clutch switch so it would crank no matter what pulled the EFI fuse so it would not start and then then cranked the car over with the clutch out and with it in, when the clutch was IN the car cranked over very slowly like it was working harder than normal to turn it over, with the clutch out it cranked easily and quickly. |

yea it makes sense to me as its putting a huge load on the engine and killing it.

It all makes sense I have just never heard of a throwout bearing going bad without making any noise before, I guess I will know more tomorrow when my local transmission shop digs into it.

I think they ruled out pretty much everything else if you think about it, the car was not running and with the clutch in there is no load from the transmission or anything else yet teh car turned over really slow, but then they let the clutch out it turned over really easily even with turning over the transmission. Chances are teh entire clutch will need to be replaced sadly, damn thing was only 10 months old SPEC stage 2 I only puit about 2000 miles on it.

Yes new Clutch, Pressure Plate and throw out bearing (SPEC stage 2), along with resurfacing the Flywheel.
