Smokes on startup...but almost none after. (5sfe)N/A
1991 N/A with 68,000. This car sat garaged for 5-9yrs. I just bought it and I checked the catalytic and it was all broken to pieces. I knocked out all the internals out and reattached the exhaust system. I have changed the oil and filter. The issue:The car smoked before and smokes a little worse now. If I start it after letting it sit awhile it smokes. If I shut the car off and restart it, it does not smoke. Thats a pretty specific issue. I was thinking it might be valve seals. What do you think it might be? If you have had this same issue please elaborate on how you fixed it. I know this engine(5sfe) has been known to have a sludge problem, but I am not sure if it is related. Thanks for any help!

Definitely valve stem seals and/or valve guides. Take the head off, bring it to a machine shop and have them replace the guides and seals and do a valve job as well as resurface the head. Get a new headgasket, slap it together and you're as good as gold.

5sfes dont have sludging problems.
just keep your oil topped off. i wouldnt bother pulling a head and spending a bunch of money to fix stem seals. if your engine breaks, use that opportunity to fix the stem seals. i wouldnt pull a head off just to change those. |

1997-2001s do. Our 2000 Camry would stall out for no reason and buck on acceleration. Switched to synthetic and increased the oil change frequency and it stopped completely after a couple of oil changes. We also received the extended warranty notice from Toyota regarding the 5SFE/1MZ sludge issue.
