this is a very good question, somethin i myself would want 2 kno.... i think TomsMR2 is right tho, it seems that the best way is to actually drive it right from the start-up instead of idling it....

I think it's important to realize the necessity of letting the car lubricate before driving. The term "warm up" has hidden the necessity for lubircation. That's the problem with the term "warm up"... it is associated with heat. So, it's not as important to get your engine up to temparature as it is to make sure that the oil in the pan has had time to lubricate all the necessary pieces. The only thing that has to be warmed up before driving is the combustion chamber... which happens really fast.
So, given this... the correct answer might be: Give your car time to circulate the oil after startup. When first driving, do not put your car under heavy load until the car is fully lubricated. Fully lubricated requires it to be at normal running temparature. Example: I usually start my car and let it idle for around a minute (+/-). Depending on the outside temp you can actually hear a difference in the engine when the car is sufficiently lubricated. I keep the rpm range under 3,000 until the car is up to temp. Once the temp gauge is reading normal... it is okay to "get on it." I am not 100% positive... But, I think it actually says this in the owners manual. It says nothing about waiting for the car's temp gauage... but, to simply wait a minute before driving. and maybe something about waiting until the idling has gone down. ?? |

Do any of your MR2 Turbo's run like an asthmatic fat kid the first 3 minutes or so after ignition?

There has got to be something wrong with my car. I live in Arizona so it's like like it needs to warm up from the cold.

I fire it up, pull it out of my garage and boost hard and rev to redline, sometimes past!! But I am building my new motor and trying to blow mine up and its harder than I thought! I'm about ready to cut the wastegate actuator, but once I get the new motor built I will let it run for a few minutes, once the idle is normal!

everytime i take off after starting it the idle is HORRIBLE! i know i have a bad idle, but if i dont let it warm up then wen i shift gears, for that split second wen i let off the gas the idle goes even higher! its like insted of the idle dropping it raises! so i let it warm up a bit =)

Guys,
Fit an oil temp gauge (right hand gauge in my pic) and you should then know when you're safe to red line it. Personally I never give mine the beans, e.g. >5,00rpm 'till the oils warm -takes anything like 10-20mins to warm-up on "normal" / light driving (water temp takes 2-3 mins to go to normal when driving off from cold). And I always give it 1-2mins on idle on start-up whether it's cold or not. Richard |

another thing.. oil doesnt actually need to get up to temperature.. it needs to get up to thinness, or viscosity. of course thats temperature related, but 20w50 at 100 degrees is much thicker than 5w30 at 100 degrees! if you want maximum startup protection, and want your oil up to "temperature" as soon as possible, run 5w30!
