gen2 3sge header, freakin awesome.
i recently got a gen2 3sge header. unfortunately i did not get the b-pipe 2-1 merge section... so i made my own.. twice. frist i welded the 2-1 merge section real far back, by the xmember.. eh, good results, but when i welded the merge right onto the manifold, it came alive nicely
the flex section on the car was cracked so i removed it and added in a 2.0 flex pipe. wanna know something weird? the stock flex pipe is 1.5 inches!! that sucks! no wonder headers add power, its the chicken-**** bpipe! so i installed the 4-2-1 gen2 header with an improved 2.0 flexpipe, and the stock 2.0 to 1.75 exhaust the rest of the way. now ive ran a pacesetter header, a ssac header with the full 2.5 setup, the stock manifold with a 2.5 inch bpipe, and now this 3sge header setup. the 3sge header setup made more power than everything so far, and a noticeable amount more torque and low end than the ssac! the response was great! silky smooth acceleration, and fun to drive.. ive got a feeling if i finished off the rest of the exhaust in 2.25 with a better muffler this thing would be damn near the best exhaust setup you could have on an mr2. the ssac header is just JUNK in comparison. after removing my ssac header and bpipe i reinstalled the stock manifold and made a 2.5 inch bpipe, i dont think i really lost much power at all.. a lot of the gain was in the bpipe, im fairly sure now. also theres quality issues with aftermarket parts. using nice OEM toyota stuff means you're buying quality.. plus these things are cheap these days. cliff notes: headsup, the stock flexpipe is 1.5 crappy inches, its choking the engine. the gen2 3sge header makes great power if you fix the exhaust and do a good merge section. next up, installing the 98 camry steel manifold with my 2.5 inch bpipe and seeing what happens. (the gen2 setup wasnt my personal car).

i have a never-used ssac header lying in my basement for about 3 years now.
"the gen2 3sge header makes great power if you fix the exhaust and do a good merge section" 1. by "fix the exhaust", do u only mean replace the flexpipe? 2. is it necessary to "do a good merge section", or would the stock 3sge collector work fine? 3. are these headers and bpipe/collectors hard to come by? 4. does the gen 2 header need to be modified in any way to bolt up to the 5sfe? thanks for this exciting info. |
