want to buy MR2
Hey guys,
I'm new to the boards, and i'm from Seattle WA. I recently found a '91 MR2 N/A Hardtop, and i've been looking for a hardtop everywhere. The only thing is, is that there's a bit of engine trouble. Will sell tonight 91 hard top toyota MR2 Non turbo I don't have a lot of experience with engine work, and I don't really know a lot of people who have experience with MR2's or midship engines at all. I'd like to buy this car if it doesn't require too much work. Doing some research, I know that a bad PCV Valve could mean many worse things. And this guy doesn't include any pictures (even though I've asked him to). Assuming this guy is honest about his description, how much work do you think it would cost to fix? And how much time do you think it would take for someone with little/no engine experience to complete the project by himself? At worst, I'd have to source and install a new engine. How hard is it to do? How much is a 5s-fe? approximately how much would it cost for a shop to do this work? Please let me know, I am hoping to be an MR2 owner myself! ![]() |

I see 5sfe engines all the time for $500 bucks on ebay. But, you're looking at $1000-$1500 to have someone install it. Could have any number of problems with that engine. Might just need a tuneup, timing, pcv valve.... or It may have bad gas in it from sitting so long. But more than like there is a reason why it's been sitting. The valves could be totally screwed.
Bottom line... if the body and interior of the car is clean. You can't go wrong for $1500 or less. You can get the 5sfe or 3sgte and still be ahead of the game. There are also v6 options... if you knew what you were doing. Lets say you paid $2000 to replace the engine... you have a $3500 mid egine sports car. How can that be wrong? And if you pay $5000 for the 3sgte swap then you have a $6500 dollar mid engine rocket. Now that is definitely not wrong. |

hm well this guy was pretty spotty. he's inconsistent with his description (put up new adds for the same cars with different description about 3 times) and never called me after asking for my # or responded to any of my many questions.
in all, not a good feel from this guy, and i decided that I'm going to wait until after i'm done with college to get any kind of sports car. Buying a sports car isn't exactly the best financial decision for me at this point. Maybe I'll see you guys again in two years! |
