300hp on a 5sfe 2.2??
heres what i got .
92 na 2.2 5spd 80000 on the motor and 112*** on the body . i want 300hp w/out a FI .. im thinking large bored, pistons ,rods and heads and then beefed up trans, any thoughts and can this be acheived. ????? and no ******** on too much money. i need helpful ideas |

High HP and NA 4 cylinders don't belong in the same sentence.
If you really have an itch to build a nice NA setup, start with a 3SGE and go from there. |

Just for a moment let's assume that this is 300hp at the crank, 300rwhp will be even harder to achieve but still theoretically possible with an unlimited budget. To make that kind of power from a 2.2 liter you are going to need to make peak torque at 8000-9000rpms. Here is the beginnings of what you will need:
Full stand alone EMS 460cc or larger injectors High flow fuel pump Forged rods Forged high compression pistons 12:1-13:1 2-3mm oversized valves Double valve springs with titanium retainers Shimless buckets 300-320 duration cams with 12-13mm lift Some very extreme and expensive head porting Lightening and balancing of the engine's rotating assembly Upgraded oil pump or dry sump Upgraded ignition system Custom header designed for 8000-9000rpms Custom intake manifold designed for the same Larger throttle body probably 70-80mm Upgraded clutch You actually don't need to upgrade the tranny or axles because you will never have enough torque to break them with an NA 5sfe. You also may want to move the wrist pin up in the piston and get custom rods to give you a better rod to stroke ratio. And there are a ton more things you should probably do just because you are in there. ![]() You will need to run race gas all the time. This engine would be awesome on a 1/4 mile track or a high speed road course but suck in an autocross or on the street and even then can you imagine screaming around all the time because you have no power down low? It would be awesome if someone built a motor like that just to prove it can be done but it's really not practical unless you are racing in a class that restricts you to that engine and you have lots of sponsors to give you lots of money. ![]() |

Yeah, it would turn heads and deafen ears. Actually I am convinced that someone out there has already exceeded 200rwhp with the 5sfe but we just haven't heard about it. The reason I say that is because a couple of cam grinders still have higher duration cams listed for the 5sfe. If nobody ever bought them then they probably wouldn't keep them on their list. I also have a set of Paco 288s (They are actually 300@0.020") cams right here that I got off of ebay. Someone was planning a major build up but chickened out.
Gina2mr2, Have you considered one of the V6s as a platform to get 300 NA hp? There is a lot of current research going into the V6s so there will be more support. If you still decide to go 5sfe then I will give you as much information as I can. |

uhhh... fyi, 4cly hondas when modded to the max can't even hit 300 hp n/a. and they got the oh so famous VTEKKK!!! maybe a few have. and i'm sure the ones that have are definitely running like 13:1 compression and everything else maxed out on pure race gas. strictly drag all-motor cars.
5sfe n/a (camry engine) doing 300hp is a pipe dream. /thread |

I'm pretty sure once you get the head to really flow, like crazy insane flowing, it wouldn't be impossible just extremely hard and expensive.

This is a bad idea all around. 3sge for n/a, camry 2.2 for street driver/use the block to make rediculous power with ALL gte parts on it.
You would have to spend about 4x as much money on a 5sfe to be fast n/a as it would take to do a gen3 swap with ALL HKS, Garage Fukui, Border Racing, etc parts making 450hp. The 5sfe is worthless for horsepower without forced induction. Strap a turbo to it and you can push it as hard as you want since you have to re-do everything anyway. ![]() |
