Tightening/Replacing alternator belt?

I have the trademark alternator belt squeal at startup. the belt looks fine and it goes away after about 5-10 seconds, so I just want to tighten the tensioner now.

Do I have to remove the cross member on this car to do something as mundane as replacing/tightening the alternator belt? I'd rather not take off the crossmember, but if I have to, I might as well replace the belt, not just tighten it.

Thanks!

buy a new belt, they're extremely cheap. if its squealing, its glazed and needs replacement.

you just reach in there and tighten it up. dont have to remove anything. the long bolt is the tensioner, the short one on the side is the lock bolt.. loosen the lock bolt first and tighten down the long one. i think the tensioner is 12mm and the lock bolt is 14mm.

Don't forget to loosen the pivot bolt (14mm) first. It'll be kinda hard to set the right tension with that thing torqued down.

Man thanks for the tip. Mine squeals for about 10-15 seconds on startup, then the noise goes away. Now I know what to do.

Gotta love the search feature on these forums.

Going to bring this back from the dead. How do you get the alternator belt on/off? The other drive belt prevents the alternator belt from just coming off.

if its been slipping for too long, it can damage the belt.. a damaged belt will require too much tension to stop it from making noise, and that damages bearings and components.

best to get a new belt. you really want to run as little tension as possible to keep stuff lasting long.
