Fabricating Exhaust...
So Im sure you've all heard about the new sub-$500 dual drfit spec exhaust made by Megan Racing, whic is somewhat appealing to me in looks, really.
but DAYUM. $500 for something that i KNOW they are getting for less than $200. They think we're freakin stupid. Hope someone who works for Megan reads this, and realizes that the cost of that exaust is BEYON absurd. Look, the exhaust system utilizes two of Megan's N1 Style Saintless Steel mufflers. OK. Those sell for $100 a PAIR. Resonator? $60 out the door. do whats left is the piping and the flange. that makes...$300? Labor and piping included. Realizing that, I have decided to replicate their exhaust. That way I can also have less outward tile to the mufflers. Two of those, and one of these(MAYBE): ...think I can do it? also if you guys would change anything about the acutal Megan System, what would u change? Im eliminating that extra flange to the muffler on the driver side..thats 1 thing Ive changed, and the angle of the mufflers...also elimate the resonator perhaps...and although the inlets are 2.5 Inches, i'll most likely stick to 2.25 piping, and then widen them at the inlets... any more ideas?? -Aaron |

No, it's really not beyond absurd at all, it's called business. By the time they factor in OH they wont make a lot. Let's see, like you said $100 per muffler so that's $200 plus 4 flanges, plus mandrel bent pipe plus electricity plus labor plus development and research costs plus in order to stay in business PROFIT. Pretty good deal for $500.
And even if they do make good money, good for them, a business should, you don't have to buy it. Sorry but I get tired of people bellyaching about the price of something, no business could survive if you guys had it your way. ![]() Anyhow, I'm also the DIY type, just for the fact of learning and I dont have lots of cash to throw around. So I say go for it if you know what you are doing, but if you don't know what you are doing then dont waste your time and money and just buy the Megan. |

Okay, $49 each, whatever, still cheap. I'll be selling exhausts this spring but I doubt they will be much cheaper than $500. If I had the money I would by the Megan for now, I'd be interested in hearing what it sounds like.

I think the angle on those fart cans would look HORRIBLE coming out the back of an MR2.

A lot of the exhausts are like that, and I agree. I'm also not a fan of exhausts tips that don't have rolled edges.

I just mean that they're pointing out and to the sides of the road, not straight back.

i honestly dont get the fascination with fart cans. a regular straight through mufflers flows just as well, and is about 100x less obnoxious.
the megan exhaust is also poorly designed, with too large pipes. the TKO dyno'd at 3 hp, but i also think its poorly designed for an na. Last edited by TomsMR2; 01-19-2006 at 11:07 PM.. |

we could guess until our eyes turn blue. if you want to know, go dyno your car.
you'll have less power because of that jet ecu, though. |
