My 5SFE is possessed! spark plug wire popping off

So, if I drive my MR2 around, then shut it off, then restart it when it's still hot, the 2nd spark plug pops off and there's smoke coming from the intake manifold.

It has happened twice so far. The car then runs fine if you put the spark plug wire back in the socket.

by 2nd wire, I mean 2nd from the driver side.

I think my engine is possessed. Any ideas?!

Did you check to see if the spark plug itself is tight?

That's your #3 plug wire. The cylinders are counted from the front of the engine (the flywheel side).

Have you torqued the spark plug? What kind of plug wire is it?

The plug wires look original, but are really tight. You have to pull the hell out of it to get it off, which makes me think there's some kind of pressure popping it off.

I didn't check the torque on the plug wire yet.

I saw you had and issue and it was similar to the other post. I am not sure if it is the same but I wanted to share with you what I told him after you had posted. I only repost this here for you, in the event that you blow a plug or have stripped out the threads. Not saying you will or have, but just in case.

Ok sorry for not catching this before now. But I had this problem before. Had no time and needed to travel from WV to MASS that day. Put my bandaid on the plug till it completely blow on the New York Parkway. I had a sleeve installed in the head for the plug and never had another problem out of it. Hope both of you get to read this. It is a lot cheaper than replacing your head. And even though it was 10 years ago the price for it to be done at a shop was very inexpensive.

Oh forgot (just in case, it is not understood) sleeve installed: They retap the plug hole and place a sleeve with threads with oem specs in place for a new plug to grap.

Hope this helps you.

right, I figure that's what they'd do as a fix for it.

I actually planned on getting a new head anyway. If the plug is stripped out, it will give me a good excuse (to my wife) why I should buy a new head.

Thanks!

bad set of wires. i dont know why it happens to specific cylinders, but your wires are bad.

your plugs are fine, if you blew a plug out you'd have much more serious issues.
