The camshaft vs the crankshalft timing marks. Crankshaft should be set to 0 on the timing mark, and camshaft should be lined up via horizon marks, and the divot mark on the cam itself (have to take the valve cover off to see that mark). Also the dowel pin faces DOWN.

Yeah, it faces down, then in the head where the cam is theres an indicator mark thats like a V and a little mark that goes in the middle of the V. So the dowel faces down, then the mark should be somewhere around the middle of the V indicator.
If I had pictures id show you. But its something you SHOULD be able to see if you pull the valve cover off. Its easy to check mechanical time on a 5S even in the car. Just set the number 1 piston to TDC by lining it to 0 on the crank with the valve cover off. Dowel should be down, and the mark on the cam (the cam with the sproket) should line up. |

Thats good info! I had to put a new engine in my MR2 and replaced the water pump and oil pump. Good I didn't move the cam or crank because once I got it back in the car it was pretty close. I just had to move the crank 1 or 2 teeth on the timing belt. then adjusted the distributor.
