This is probably heresy but...

How would I go about supercharging a 5S-FE? Like, what supercharger(s) would fit, what kind of pressure could I run, what kinds of costs would I run into installing it?

Because it seems like everybody has a turbo second gen, and I really want to take advantage of the fact that nobody (That I've ever heard of) has a supercharged second gen. Getting the low end torque going really interests me.

This is about the only MKII I know of that has a SC.

Supercharged MKII!!!11!!!!

Tom would probably be able to give you decent advice.

nothing bolts on, or even comes remotely close to it. it'll run you between 10 bucks and about 15 thousand. take between a day and a few years.. you could run 2 to 50psi.

theres a really, really large gray area

Yeah, like people mentioned in the other thread, the supercharger has instantaneous response vs. a turbo which has lag, and also superchargers give you a much more even power curve, usually.

I was wondering if there was any "easy" (Read: any supercharger at all that will fit the 5s-fe) way to supercharge it. And I was wondering about what kinds of pressure I could run without blowing my engine apart within just a few thousand miles.

And the money....well, lets just hypothetically say that money is no matter right now, so I can just get an idea if it's even feasible to s/c the 5s-fe.

There is no easy way to S/C the 5s. None bolt right up =(

However, there is an easy way to turbo the 5s using 3s-gte parts =p

Like I said, I don't want a turbo because of the turbo lag and I really want to boost up the low end torque. Also, you don't see any mkII's with a supercharger! It would be pretty awesome to have it.

I know the new Scion tC has an option for a centrifugal supercharger...I wonder how difficult it would be to adapt that to fit?

You're still going to have "lag" with a centrifugal supercharger, didn't rip mods have a kit for awhile? I also seem to remember seeing a UK site with an mr2 with a roots type blower. I think it was called "Goldy." Lots and lots and lots of fab work to get it running... Still, cool project. If you've got the time and access to a machine shop go for it!

I know you don't want a turbo, but check out some dyno plots of 5SFTE's, done right they're pretty impressive.

First of all, a centrifugal supercharger doesn't have *lag*, just because it has dynamic compression the pressure is proportional to the the speed of the compressor, which is driven by the crankshaft. So at lower rpm's, it doesn't run as much boost as at higher rpm's. So no, it doesn't technically have *lag*, you just feel it more the higher the engine revs.

I was just mentioning a centrifugal s/c because I am pretty sure the s/c for the Scion tC is centrifugal, and seeing as that Scion is owned by Toyota and uses Toyota engines, the s/c would probably be pretty close to fitting. If I remember, the engine is an "S" series in the tC.

I would look into Roots or Lysholm Screw type superchargers also. Like I said earlier, low-end torque is what I am going for.

EDIT: The engine in the tC is the "AZ" series, which replaced the "S" series. My bad.

Since the site is down, would you care to elaborate?

just seeing how much of a hassle it was making all the custom mounts, and this and that, then this not working, having to flip that around. all in all by the time it was done and he had his intercooler in there it looked like there was hardly even enough room to check the dip stick. he had to make custom mounts so the supercharger kinda sat above the heatshield for the header and all that. just looked like WAY more work than i'd really wanna do for that.

Thanks for the vid!

That looked pretty awesome, but yeah it also looked like TONS of custom fab work. Hmm...

Is this the one with the supercharger from a Mini?

Ok, technically the lag is different than with a turbo, I'll give you that. But isn't what you posted essentially the definition of lag?

When properly sized a turbo can spool sooner, which would make more low end torque, and hold boost longer than a centrifugal supercharger. However, I agree a roots type blower would be Ideal for augmenting low end torque. Too bad its such a PITA to fit to our cars.

With all that said… I think a twin charged MR2 would be wicked! I briefly had that idea but realized I want to drive the car more than I want to work on it.
