The second shop I went to said the other side was starting to go as well. So rather than do it half ass i would rather pay to have it fixed right. As mush as I dont want to spend the money it needs done.
Do you know of a place that I could order it from? I found one but i want to shop around as well |

well if you know a mechanic personally or anyone who works at or has anything to do with carquest the i think it was only like 350 or something with my goodyear discount but like i said i ended up getting my tie rod at advance...i dont work at goodyear anymore or id help you out...although by the time u get the rack put it in and get an alignment your going to be looking at some big $$ IMO i recommend that u have someone give u a real answer (i.e.- you have a drivers side inner and passenger side outer tie rod loose) rather than the bland answer "u need a rack" its like going to the doctor and he checks u out and says...ur broke....doesnt help much huh....
drivers inner-http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductList.aspx?PartType=79&PTSet=A drivers outer While we find your parts, please enter your ZIP Code at PartsAmerica.com passengers im sure are the same price! thats like 200 and then an alignment and thats only if u need all 4 parts!! ask them spefifically wats wrong with your rack |

Good grief guys.
If there's play then your tie rods on the left are likely shot. You should replace both sides at once if you can swing it. Fluid leaking out of it is pretty much a guarantee that the rack is gone. They can't be DIY rebuilt, they have to be replaced. I suggest that you first check with Aaron at Lithia Toyota, they are a board sponsor and a much better source than rockauto generally. They give club members a discount too. If he can't supply you with one then I suggest you go into the marketplace forums here and check with the people parting out cars. The steering rack in the MR2 is really easy to replace because of the fact that there's no engine in front blocking the linkage. ![]() Last edited by Gairloch; 09-19-2008 at 05:39 AM.. |

you can DIY rebuild them.. its just an amazing nightmare
check out the service manual for it sometime, its pretty nuts!the oem racks are pretty expensive, closing in on a grand i think. an aftermarket oem remanufactured one is about 300 bucks, not too bad really.

Since we've got Dad's 91 on the lift we've noticed the same problem... someone has probably drifted our front end into a curb or something cause ours is shot too. Rediculous play in the rack!! We're about to hunt one down too.

If you find one let me know where you find it. I have the option of getting it rebuilt so if i cant find one i might just pony up the extra $100 and have it done that way.

Well guys I have made up my mind. I am going to try and get a new rack from toyota and get that installed or look into how hard it is to put it in myself. So if there is a how-to that you know of send it my way. Thanks a lot guys.
