AUTO TO MANUAL TRANNY SWAP PRICING
I was just wondering if anyone has an idea how much parts would cost to do the auto to manual tranny swap... if i were to do it myself i mean. and what parts do i need. i know there is the tranny, axles, shifter, clutch, clutch master cylinder, brake pedal, ecu (i would rather have a manual ecu in stead of tricking the auto ecu). what other parts are needed... if any? ALSO what are the advantages and disadvantages of JDM?? i know some people don't like JDM, but i don't know why. also where is a good place to get parts and transmissions? i don't want to get some crappy tranny but then again i don't want to pay my life savings on one either.

it'll run about 600 to 100 dollars depending on the deal you get from the ppl here on the board. I got almost all my stuff from CJONESMR2. The rest of the stuff i got from doing a lil search. the hardest thing is to get a good tranny that doesn't grind or spit gears. I got mine for 100 dollars.
you can use the automatic axles they are the same (I'm using auto axles in my car) you need the 2 shifter cables ( no the turbo cables are not the same! ) you need the shifter Assembly The shifter knob with bezel you need the slave and master cylinder. ( i recommend getting the slave cylinder brand new. its cheap and in a very uncomfortable place to get too so just buy it new and put it on while the tranny is out) you need the clutch pedal assembly you need the brake pedal Assembly (smaller then the auto) you need all the hydro lines ( search at the threads I've made i have one where Aaron listed everything i needed. it'll run 100 something dollars brand new!) the longest hydro line costs a lil less then 60 bucks and you need to get from the dealer (local dealer because its so long shipping sucks!) get the hydro lines new! you don't want leaks! um... u can use the auto ecu and the auto harness if you do the swap and can tell you how to tun the car on by tricking the ecu ( had this problem lol ) very easy. the only problem i had is that the mount on the farthest left side ( driver ) didn't come with the tranny and its the only mount that is different and you cant take from the auto to put in the manual like the rest. cost be 180 at Toyota I'm sure u can get it cheap or have something on the forum sell it. oh u need the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel. I used OEM exedy and works fine. if i missed anything or need any help om me. |

the 91 AT ecu is actually better than the 91 MT ecu. 93's are functionally the same.
you'd have to change the body harness with the engine harness.. you'd also need new sensors, a new tb if its a 91, and i think injectors. its more of a pain in the ass than its worth.. its actually worthless since it wont run any better with the mt ecu.

ok. sweet. thanks guys. i just wanted the manual ecu because i figured that it would easier and more legit... and i figured it would have less problems later on down the road. but i will take your word that the AT ecu is easier... i've never done any of this type of work before so i didn't know. it will probably be a while before i do a swap because i have no job or resources to do the swap right now. really appreciate the input guys. my car has about 167,000 miles on it right now. do yall recommend that i rebuild the engine soon? it hasn't been rebuilt before and i keep it maintained pretty well... but i'm fairly sure that the previous owner didn't take very good care of it

I wouldn't say you have to rebuild it right now. if you've taken good care of it til' now it should be on good condition. Check your compression and see if it's up to spec. Since an engine rebuild covers most of the stuff you should enjoy your engine until you are ready to spend the money on a build. Until your old one gives out, or until you have all the parts in yo hand so you can start working on your rebuild as soon as possible.

is there a write up or a how-to anywhere for doing this conversion? or at least a simple what needs to go where and in which order? i will be tackling this job for a customer and i figure i should probably do my research before i undergo the operation.

im swapping my motor soon, doesnt help the AT-MT swap...a little, in the thought that i am pulling the whole tranny, axles, hubs, clutch job, shift linkage, etc. also, im going to have the S54 tranny and cables, plus i have the stock shifter, so really all you would need is the pedal assembly, if anyone wants it let me know, u can have it cheap, ill have axles too, but i hear the AT and MT axles are the same
