How to fix T-tops Leaking
This is another write up I am doing on how to stop your tops from leaking from the door seals.I should charge for this info....Anyways it is very simple and I have tested my car vigorously to make sure it doesn't leak.
Flooding the top of my car with a hose and 2 weeks of raining and the tops have still not leaked.Edit::still has not leaked to this date of 7-31-9... You will need a roll of electrical tape and a razor blade.. All you do is put the tape in layers one on top of another 6 to 7 times on the seal located on the T-top itself where it touches the seal on the door jam. Take the top off the car.Flip the top over and put one piece of tape horizontally starting at the bottom of the seal, then another piece over lapping the first piece slightly, then repeat starting at the bottom again.do this 6 to 7 times for a tight seal...then cut away the side of the tape to match the groves of the seals..it should look like this.. Edit:New pics- so you can see better.. ![]() Last edited by mattdouken; 07-31-2009 at 07:00 PM.. Reason: New pics |

Sweet... I need to do this for my passenger side T-top.... thanks for the writeup.
By the way.. set your camera on "macro" if you want to take a better closeup picture... Macro is the one with the little flower icon on the camera settings |

This fix works
I bought my mr2 and it did not leak in a light to moderate rain while driving down the highway. I left my mr2 parked outside at work during a down pour and my passenger seat was soaked. I tried adjusting the rings in the top and that did not work. The water was coming though where the front of the T-top met the front of the seal. I applied a few layers of tape like in the pictures and no leaks so far, which is great. I will update everyone to how the electrical tape holds up. I live in Indianapolis and it gets just as hot as it does cold so the tape will be put to the test. I might make a trip to a local vendor here in Indy that specializes in 3m products and see what they have. But for the cost of one roll of electrical tape its budget friendly

also a new tip i recently learned,if you spray some lithuim grease (the spray kind in a can)on the seals of the tops and the car itself and let the grease sit for a min or two,it makes the seals swell up a little......
My tops are going on 6 months with no leaks with this method and thats with taking the tops on and off.. |

Do you let the grease stay on or do you wipe it off after it sits? I am all for doing things to prolong the life of the seals since they are so expensive.

ive also heard that you can use black silicon gasket maker. from what i understand, all you do is apply the gasket maker to the t-top seal, then rub a small amount of vasaline on the body side where the gasket meets (this will keep the gasket maker from sticking to the body side seals)put the tops on and let it sit for about 30-45 minutes. after it dries, take the tops off and wipe off the vasaline and it should seal. i havent tested this yet, but ive heard of people doing it on 2's and some 300zx's around here and they said it works. i'll give it a shot and post the results.
