new owner question

hello,

just bought my 1st MR2... its a 91 N/A with 90000miles on it... although its an A/T, im fully satisfied with it!!!

question: i find that the steering feels heavy but yet responsive, is that how its supposed to be? im not having any issues whatsoever but i just wanted to confirm. next is about the acellerator pedal. my pedal feels a bit harder to press on compared to other cars. is there a way i can adjust this and make it more softer.. maybe adjust the spring???

any input on this is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

yes the streeing is a little hard because mr2s have an electric power streeing. and the heavy acellerator pedal might be the spring you mentioned it maybe rusty, replace or spray some wd40.

There are enough cars with manual steering racks out there that it's a good idea to not assume that someone has power steering when they talk about having heavy steering

Wish I had manual steering, how hard is it to convert to a manual rack? Not to hijack the thread or anything... >_>

just curious but why? power steering seems like it would be easier to turn and faster to turn.

Well a manual steering rack feels about the same under power (moveing) and a manual rack would mean less weight and I just like the feel and responsiveness of a manual rack, knowing that you are making it turn.

The power steering only assists to around 35mph? Right??? So above that there should be no "feel" difference between the two.

Hmm... seems like a lot of new Gen 2 MR2 owners all of a sudden!

Just bought a '93 MR2 N/A and it is my first MR2. It does have a 5-speed manual though. Also my first sports car. Never driven it, but will be picking it up on Friday. Updates and pictures then.

been driving stick since i learned how to drive... so having a nice nimble car with A/T is satisfying for me... although turbo would be nice... there's just no room (or road i should say) for me to drive it for me to appreciate...

So I just paid for the car in full and drove it for the first time today. I have to say it drives like nothing I've ever driven before. Although I do have to say I would like a 6th gear since the rpms are over 3,000rpms over 65mph in 5th.

Somethings that I've noticed... When I turn the lights on and then turn them off the revs go down to about 500 rpms and then comes back up to 800-900 rpms.

Also, the engine lid doesn't seem to want to open. It is the little lever behind the driver's seat right?

ok your revs drop when you turn the lights on because your alternator only produces 70 amps, switching to a 100 amp will help ,but alternator replacement is a bitch and the 70 amp is fine.

as for the engine lid,if the rubber bumpers are to low or are not on there at all the lid wont pop up,so get someone to pull up on the lid as you pull the lever behind the seat, then adjust the rubber bumpers.

as for the original post burakol i belive im helping you with it in another post.i will have the pics soon.

The weird thing about the lights is that revs go DOWN when lights are turned OFF. Not turn on.

Unless he's got a monster stereo drawing a power like crazy he is NOT seeing this because he may or may not have a 70 amp alternator. There is definitely something wrong with the wiring in this car. Something is grounding out and creating an additional draw when the switch is being manipulated.

That is quite interesting. Have you looked over the ignition systems to make sure everything is in good shape? I would also check and make sure that the engine/chassis ground is making good contact.
