BIG issue. Car dead on highway.
Right now my poor 2 is sitting all by her self in the cold dark rain.
This has happened twice now. Driving down the road the car is cruising down the highway just fine. holding speed and RPMs and when I push on the gas, the car hesitates. when I hit the gas harder the engine stops responding totally. now this will happen for a short period of time before the motor becomes completely unresponsive and stalls when in gear (just like you turned the key to off). I changed the wires and the car started and was driving fine for a bit but the problem returned. so maybe it only does it when it's warmed up? but I doubt it because I can't get it to start back up even after sitting for 20 or so minutes. Throw out ALL suggestions. I'm going back tomorrow on my day off to get this thing working ASAP because I have **** I need to do outside of working on the car out in the cold with basic tools. |

you're not gonna figure anytihing out till you check the stuff i told you man. check plug wells for water, and the dizzy cap for water first. that would make sense since it was raining.

Well, you're right, but I'm a better internet tech than I am dazzling salesman
I don't expect to sell an igniter because they are so blessed expensive that most people find a used one rather than buy a new one. But I've burned up three or four of them, and your symptoms match my experience. I hope I'm wrong and your fix is what it needed. What kind of spark plug wires are you running, and when were they installed? |

I swear this same problem with the MkII's comes up on this board every week it seems.
I had the same issue with my car after I degreased the engine bay. Right after I hosed off the engine it would idle fine and the engine would run perfect at very little throttle. As soon as I gave it any gas, the engine would stumble or sputter and die. Turned out that my TPS didn't like being wet so much and was not sending a signal back to the ECU so that ever time I gave it gas, the ecu wouldn't add more fuel when I opened the throttle. After I dried it out with a heat gun, the car ran fine. So far rain hasn't affected it but I do get nervous when it gets cloudy now. You see, this is my biggest issue with guessing and throwing parts at a problem until it "goes away". Because you are never 100% certain that you fixed what was actually wrong. In my case, if I had not started testing everything in my car, I would never have discovered the shorted out TPS. I could have replaced all kinds of things and eventually the TPS would have dried out and the car would have run again regardless of what I replaced. Now I'm not saying that your problem is the same as mine or even the cause is the same. All I am saying is before you start replacing things, be 100% certain that you fully understand the problem and the cause of the problem. Your car and your pocket book will thank you. (steps off soap box) Scott |

If water was so bad I wonder why some MR2s didn't come with the rain guard???
I guess they either didn't notice or wanted to you to order 1 or they knew it was bad and that you would go into toyota dealership buying parts making them more money |

Didn't come with it? It's more likely that over the course of the last fourteen to nineteen years, some of them were removed, damaged, and/or lost.

Lol.
Anyways, car is running again the only think I can figure is that rain was seeping past the ignition wire from the pack to cap and shorting out the thing. |

Or it could be that new ignition wire from the ignitor to the cap that you had left off when you changed the rest of the wires.
Because it stalled while you were driving and it was raining when you went back out there causes me to doubt that water had much to do with your situation. |

the turbo lid is the only lid that has a completely removable rain guard.
