Is my 5sfe an Interference engine...?
I think I blew my engine and I was told I may have an "interference" engine and it may be out of time...

non-inter. ur timing belt breaks and all it'll do is turn off and not turn back on. Till you put it back on.

+1 ^^^ on non interference like most Toyota's. Good thing you are not driving a Honda!
![]() BUT if "blown engine" was piston rod breaking, then all bets are off. Just might "interfere" with valves. Last edited by mr24u; 01-15-2009 at 11:18 AM.. |

Maybe I should elaborate...
It is Saturday night... I was jamming to some tunes heading West bound on I-20 at about 80 MPH on my way to my brothers... Everything is smooth sailing... Then all of the sudden my dash lights all come on as if the engine died... I thought "what the hell"... I pressed on the clutch and tried to restart my engine... All of the lights where drained looking... I figured the battery must be dead... I coasted to the side of the highway and turned down the radio... I tried again and the battery seemed very weak... It did not seem to have the juice to turn the engine fast enough to start, but it did... Then it died again... I got out and looked over the car... Not sure what I was trying to accomplish there... I got back in and tried one more time and got it started... I kept it running good enough to get to a gas station off the next exit... I parked it and it smelled like rubber burning... Oh yeah... I left out that it sounded like someone was in my engine juggling ball bearings... And they weren't doing a good job of it either... I am sure it is just a slipped timing belt or something but I have had enough of this car... I want something newer and more reliable... This thing will be in the "Parts for Sale" forum very soon... I have said it once before, but I am serious this time... ![]() |

Sounds like you seized the motor, most likely due to lack of oil, and then just managed to get it unseized and drove it to the gas station, probably destroying your cylinder walls among other things along the way, hence the horrible noises.
You may be out of luck on this one, drain the oil and tell me if there is chunks of metal in it. |

check ur alt belt... if u were smelling a rubber burning it could be a belt... since you said there was not enough power... if it was the tbelt, im sure u wont be able to start it back... happened same thing to me before... if you're out of electricity, no spark, no spark no run... did you notice if your temp went up to a point of over heating?

When my timing belt slipped at 5000rpm (imagine that!), I pulled over and it was still revving at 500rpm, but barely. I revved it a little and it sounded like something blew and it vibrated extremely badly from running out of time. All of the dash lights were on, but the engine was still turning (which I thought was weird). Once I shut it off, I was unable to start it back up. The belt probably broke or came free as I tried to crank it again.
But after a new timing belt/water pump, I was good to go. Do have it checked out and let us know. |

I am sure I will be the most hated person in this thread when I say what I am about to say... I am picking up my 2004 S2000 Saturday 1/23/9...
I intend to finish up the old RX-7 and sell it... I will also be getting under and around the engine on the MR2... If I can repair it without it taking a year, I will do so... If it looks to be a lengthy process, it is parts... If I fix it, it will be sold... I love that car but I am getting tired of the projects... There is a 69 Datsun Roadster 1200 on craigslist... That is the kind of project I would like to tackle... Nice and simple... I really think the timing belt just slipped or another belt (Alt belt) jumped off and is wedged between a pulley and a non-moving part and that is why the battery seemed weak and there was a burning rubber smell... I will hopefully find out this weekend and I will let you all know what I find... Thanks all for the support... |

No one will blame you for buying an S2K, a surprising number of ex-MR2 owners buy S2Ks.

Just an update... I have not been able to get around to the 2 yet... I got the RX-7 completed... I have to get good gas in it because it sat for about a year and a half... After I get the bad gas all ran out of it I will get it inspected, tagged and sold...
I hope to get the chance to look at the MR2 this weekend... I know I said that last week but I have to get it fixed or parted so I can get it out of my garage... I have to make room for the S2000 I just bought... As soon as I know what is wrong I will definitely let everyone know... I appreciate everyone's input and opinions... I will be back with an update soon... : ) |
