Turbo brake conversion

I have a 91 NA with 129,000 miles on the original front calipers, I was wondering does anyone know if, I can just install turbo calipers on my car or do I have to modify it? Is it a simple plug and play? Do I have to upgrade the master cylinder, brake lines?

If I upgrade the front, would you recommend that I upgrade the rear in order to keep the car more balanced under heavy braking? Thanks for your time.

you can just install them.. you have to put the turbo mc on too, as well as the proportioning valve.

i did, really makes zero difference anywhere except a track where you can get some heat into them.

91t's use the same rear brakes as na's.

Is the master cylinder or the proportioning valve expensive to buy or long/hard to install? I probably wouldn't be doing the work myself, only because I don't have the time to install and its like 25 degrees outside right now. Thanks for your help.

I did this a few years ago on my NA. I just bought the calipers and mounting brackets. They swapped out with no problems or issues. You may want to make sure that the turbo calipers are from a 91-92 b/c the 93+ may be different.

you NEED the prop valve. the bigger turbo master cylinder helps take up some slack in the pedal travel, but the prop valve keeps your brakes getting the correct percentage of power. turbo calipers with an na prop valve makes your rear bias too strong. you end up stopping SLOWER.

adding turbo front calipers without the prop valve, is in every way, a downgrade.

on the street, daily.. you wont notice. but if you're doing "performance" brake upgrades, dont you want them to... well.. perform better?

91 turbo prop valves are really cheap.. you could probably grab one for 5 or 10 bucks from a part out. the 91 turbo setup really is a fantastic setup, but people get waaay ahead of themselves and *think* they need the 93 setup. 99% of the time they dont, so you can pickup really great 91t parts for cheap.. while 93t parts have a huge premium.

the master cylinder isnt so important, but you're gonna want to get one eventually. i used a 4 runner cylinder which is way bigger than a turbo mc. gives great modulation but requires significantly more pedal pressure.

Don't forget that you'll also need new pads and rotors in front.

If you're really looking for some kind of brake performance upgrade I suggest you look at the Porterfield R4s for street driving.

Go on....

so, in summary of this thread, for an n/a to turbo brake upgrade:
turbo brake master cylinder.
turbo proportioning valve.
turbo rotors.
turbo calipers and mounting brackets.

new pads and fluid to suit.

anything else?

Any idea of what this proportioning valve looks like, or where it located?

Ya, I did the swap with my NA rotors. I just need the valve now. They work fine though.

the prop valve is the small metal thing under the master cylinder. just follow the hardlines from the master, they run right into the prop valve. its small, fits in the palm of your hand.

I replaced everything on my car when i rebuilt it, so i have everything that you need for an upgrade. Its of a 1999 car N/A 70.000 miles but since we only had one model car here everthing is Turbo spec.
Master cylinder , proportionating valve, resivour, all four calipers. I would just get a refurbishing kit from Toyota for the calipers

Only the rears are the same. The front rotors are larger.
