new member!!! also first question....

ok well hows it goin everyone? I just decided to register but im definently not a newcomer to the site. I have acquired my first 93 mr2 n/a. Its been resprayed a much more vived version of the oem teal green. Well anyways...i purchased the car from a local guy that bought it 2.5 years ago. The car only has 90k original miles. But as a technical school project they rebuilt the motor outta his 91 mr2 and swapped it in when the car had like 45k on it. (guess he didnt research bout the 93 5s being slightly better) But ever since he got it the power steering hasnt worked. Its there so i would like to get it working. I have checked my codes and got the code 11. When i checked the fluid it was completly empty, but i dont seem to have any leaks. Maybe the previous owner drained the fluid thinking it would be easier to turn...not real sure. But i filled it and tried the key flicking idea. Nothing has worked. I tried the ford/chrysler relay and still got nothing. The p/s light isnt on but the pump has never even tried to come on, ive never heard/felt it do anything. So any ideas on what to check next would be greatly appreciated. im becoming very frustrated!

Welcome aboard!

Well, I guess fill up the P/S and see if it helps.. I forget what the Code 11 was.. What did it say? They are usually right on the penny.

code 11 is basically the code that said its broken but we dont know why...lol its kinda just a very broad code. The resevoir is refilled, that didnt make a difference either. It just seems odd that the pump has never even made any noise!

The BGB has instructions on testing the Pump and relay with a voltmeter to track down where your fault is occurring. Start there.

As far as the pump, the way to test is to jack up the front of the car, put your fluid in then start the car. Turn the wheel back and forth and this will tell the PS steering ECU to start the pump.

The pump does not run all of the time...only when the Steering ECU tells it to. The relay does have to be functional, but this simple test will tell you if the pump is working. It is not very loud, but you should be able to hear it and definitely feel it...vibrates a little to the touch.

Hint: Remove the plastic shroud in the frunk to reveal the pump, Steering ECU, etc.

Yeah...but that is the kewl thing about this board. You get to learn by other peeps' experience.

By the way, I got under the car to inspect it..to make sure no leaks and all was still tight. PERFECT!!!

Yay!

Gotta love it when a plan comes together! (A-Team theme music plays)
