Timing Belt

Hi everyone, just a few questions about changing the timing belt, it is do-able without dropping the engine right? I recently went to a local dealer and they wanted $550 for the job (t-belt + accessory belts) so I decided to do it myself. I have read the instructions on the 91 repair manual and I have a 93 5SFE, has anything changed much between the 91s and 93s?

Also, a friend recommended that I change out the accessory belts, water pump and oil pump while I'm at it, I was wondering if those parts are easily accessed once the t-belt is off.

Lastly, I would love any tips or recommendations about doing this job.

Thanks for any response or feedback!

well i am sure if you do a search you will pull up more info on it.
i have a 91 and i am gonna need to do mine. from what i understand in addition to all the belts, h20 pump etc you should also be prepared to replace the belt tensioners and the cam gear seals. i have oil coming from under my timing cover so it appears that mine are leaking. but you might as well do everything while you have that side of the motor up and accessible.
if you hit up te51levin (aaron) he works for Lithia Toyota up north and he can prob give you a list of all the parts he recommends you obtain for this job. but i am pretty sure you may want to search first because i know i have seen it discussed before.
good luck!

In general, granted I am learning this platform, when you do something like a timing belt you want to hit all the components that you can while the belt is off to be on the safe side; oil pump & seal/gasket, water pump & seal/gasket, timing belt tensioner, idler pullies, cam seals, and any other gaskets/seals that are easy to access. Definitely call your local dealer or the site sponsor as well as reading a bit more on here before you tackle a project like that. $550 sounds about right for a job like that to be honest. I would need to see what the cost on parts is and standard job time, but that sounds pretty close for such an important service.

It's not that tough, and the dealer will always rip you off. $550 is no where near a good price for that kind of work.

This should help... same engine..

Stork- They wanted $550 just for the belt and accessory belts. I asked if I wanted to change out the seals, gaskets, and pumps it would have been parts plus another 2-3 hours of labor. Which would bring my total up to probably around a grand. The reason for me trying to do this on my own is that I want to learn how to do everything. But thank you for your reply

Jcamry- thanks for that link! It will help me out a bit!

^if thy are only going to charge you 2-3 hours labour, get the quote for labour and bring them the parts. I have the 3S-ge and it took A LOT longer than 2-3 hours for me.

Timing belt on a 5SFE is a cake job. I can do one in about 2 hours.

I cant see 550 dollars being fair unless thats paying for parts AND labor, and even then thats pretty much on the expensive side.

im on week 3 with my timing belt job

i jacked the car up and took 3 days off. removed the wheel and took 2 days off.. actually removing and installing the timing belt took about an hour.. but then i had to put the wheel back on and took another week off

but yeah, its an easy job. get yourself a ratcheting 14mm to quicken the whole thing up.

The timing cover and the engine mount bracket kinda comes off as one... You have to loosen the timing cover and the mount bracket, then pull them both out at the same time.

Youll notice the timing cover is held on by several 10mm bolts. You can take them off, then remove the bracket and the cover together. You cant get the timing cover off with the bracket in the way, and you cant get the bracket off with the cover in the way, so they kinda have to come off at the same time.

Thanks.

Ended up removing the alternator and mounting bracket as well.

What's the correct size socket for the crank bolt? 3/4, 19mm or 20mm. Gots to go buy the right one.

the engine mount comes off completely separate of the timing covers. its 3 14mm headed bolts.

crank bolt is 19mm. japanese cars dont use SAE sized bolts. toyota uses 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 22, and some 24mm's.

Not the mount Tom. The mount comes out.

The mounting bracket will NOT come out without removing the timing covers, OR removing 3 of the 4 engine mounts and raising the engine WAY high in the air.

Ive done this a time or 2 sir.

i just did it last week. it certainly comes out without removing the covers. you have to jack the engine up, tilt the bracket, and pop.. out it comes.
