Nasty intake manifold
OK so I cleaned the inside of my intake manifold as good as i could with some b-12 chemtool and a brass brush because it was gross in there with a bunch of oil sludge/gunk. So my question is what can be done to stop this from happening again and also what caused it to build up in the intake manifold anyways?

That is build up over the years of blowby be recirculated. There is nothing that can really be done to eliminate it, but you can do things to reduce it. Stuff like a oil catch can or doing a Seafoam type treatment every 10K miles or so.....

The breather hose that goes from the valve cover to the intake, it goes in line with the hose. You'll get two seperate hoses: one from the catch can to the intake and one from the catch can to the valve cover. Then you find a place to mount it if its a universal kit with the mounting parts supplied and viola. You'll have to watch the level and dump it every so often. There will be a sight on the catch can itself so its idiot proof. Unless you neglect to check it that is.

You just connect the hose from the Valve Cover to the catch can and from there back to the intake.
It is the hose on the pipe that is pressed into the driver side of the Valve Cover. |

Cant you just eliminate that hose all together? get a breather filter for the head and plug the end on the intake. Then you wouldnt recirculate that junk through the motor???

Actually, most of the crap you get in your intake manifold, like a gummy buildup is because of your EGR valve. Its recirculating exhaust gases back through the intake. Thats where most your garbage in there comes from.

it took 19 years for that much stuff to build up in your manifold. its fine, dont worry about it.

I doubt anyone has ever cleaned the one on mine. Soooo, I want to do it soon. Are there any things in particular I should watch out for? Anything I would want to avoid messing with?

the inside is as shiny as the outside. if ur gonna keep ur egr i recommend cleaning that out too and making sure the valve moves up and down loosely. |
