mrturrari rebuild questions
MRTURRARI,
I have used your write up for 5sfe pwr build w/o pwr add ons. Just to review some of the changes I made to the engine during the build, 763 webcam. 20 over bore, green top injectors. Currently waiting for new motor mounts before going back in. I was told by a local tuner (I really don't know the tuner) that a piggy back AFC would be required for this setup to run. This is my first rebuild, using the BGB and your write up to complete. A AFC was not mentioned or I missed it in the write up. Will an AFC be required for this? I know it is not exactly like your write up, do you believe there could be any issues with my changes? Thank you for your write up and assistance. |

Yes you do need something to tune fuel if you use the 315cc injectors for sure. It is listed for the performance build because of that. You may or may not absolutely require the larger injectors depending on your other mods but it gives you the head room for if and when you cross the limits of the stock ones. A rev1 5sfe will hit that sooner then a rev2. Even if you use the stock injectors it is a good idea to tune it with an AFC or EMS to be sure your AFRs are good and you are getting the most power for your mods.
Have you bought the cams yet? If not and this is an NA build then I would recommend the 294 grind over the 763. They are actually very similar but the 763 has a little more lift and a little less overlap which works better with forced induction. The 294 is a good NA cam even if you raise the redline 500-1000rpms. They both seem to come on strong right around 4300rpms but the 294 pulls a little stronger to redline. Both will really give the 5sfe more upper-midrange RPM torque. |

Thank you. I guess that is what I get for not following the instructions exact. I already have the 763 cams. Engine is together, waiting on bushings and other mounting parts for everything to go back in. Others (meaning locals that say they know imports, but little to no knowledge of MR2s) were telling me that it would not start with new injectors. Just needed verification from someone who had trusted knowledge of MR2. You. So thank you again. Now I really wish I had followed the instructions to the letter. bummer.

Don't wory you will still like the 763 cams. The difference isn't that big between them. They also IMHO give you a touch more low end and a slightly bigger torque peak in the 4000-4500rpm range then the 294s do. They are so close in fact that you may be able to get away with running the stock injectors with no other mods. Still I would check that with a wideband.
The 5sfe will start with the 315cc injectors but you will be insanely rich at WOT so you need to pull fuel across the board and you should tune the curve to the mods you have. Hence the need for an AFC if you use them. |

running that rich will damage your engine. it washes the oil off the rings and causes pretty rapid wear. dont even try.
ems's arent that popular anymore.. you can grab up decent ones off ebay for cheap. its worth doing. theres tons of power trapped up in the crappy stock ecus!
