it is the intake temperature sensor and my guess is any sensor that cam with the car is generally helpful to it running right in some way. that being said i would try and hit up a junk yard and find one and just rewire it back up and plug it in. shouldnt take more than 3 minutes to do it

yes its necessary. solder on a new connector and plug it back in. you should be able to find the connector and sensor in any junkyard.. steal it off a camry or celica.

Air density changes with temperature. Different air densities require different fuel and timing maps. This is more noticeable with a turbo.

It also plays a role in cold start. Usually the ecu compares the coolant temp to intake temp to determine whether or not it should go into cold start.

Your car will run, but it will be happier if you re-install an intake air temp sensor.
