Building a 5sfe

Well, i picked up my 2 a few weeks ago knowing that it needed engine work. Got it halfway home, and she was done. So i am now trying to decide between an engine build or just picking up a high compression jy motor.

JY motor will cost me around 900 in this area.

Does anyone have a breakdown of what a rebuild would cost and maybe suggestions on what parts to use. Hoping to build the engine a little better, and possibly build for boost.

How the 2 will be used: DD and autocross car
Wanting low end power to pull me through corners. Don't like how this car pushes the front end, so i'd like enough power to get the back end around if i need to.

Input would be very helpful. Hoping to have an idea of what i wanna do soon so i can get started on it.

I've done some looking on build threads and noticed that people are using 3s rods. Do these drop right in? No modifications? What about pistons? Don't really wanna spend 700 on pistons, but i think they may need replaced.

One thing you need to consider before you start building is what class you want to run in autocross. Most engine mods will put you in a class in which an NA MR2 is no longer competative.

3s rods require that the crank be ground to fit them. It's not a difficult thing for a machine shop to do and is actually pretty cheap if the motor is apart. It is only neccesary though if you want to raise your redline.

If you stay NA then the stock type pistons are fine and work with 3s rods. If you want a compression change then you will need custom ones or shave the head.

So assuming i wanted to stay in the stock class... should i try to find a low milage jdm motor? or go with a local jy motor?

The 5SFE was never released in japan. If you want to stay in a stock class I believe you will have to source another 5SFE.

Ok, i just assumed that the low milage motors that i've been seing were jdm motors.

a very aggressive alignment stops the push. pushing drives me absolutely nuts! run much less rear toe.

What would constitute "much less" rear toe. Just asking cuz i'd need to take it in to have it done. Are there alignment specs i can tell them to use for the rear?
