3SGE Transmission to 5sfe
Hey,
I'm new to the MR2 world, and if this question has been posted already, I apologize...but after doing some research I learned that a 5SFE tranny will bolt on a 3sge right? (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyhow, if that's true then that means that the 3sge and the 5sfe both have similiar blocks right? (Threads, design, etc). Then couldn't I go around the other way? And bolt a 3sge Tranny to a 5sfe? Let me know if anyone has done this... |

the 3sge and 5sfe share the same gear box, the 3sgte on the other hand is different

the 3sgte gearbox also bolts onto the 5sfe.. but yeah, the 3sge and 5sfe both use S54 transmissions which are identical, except the gen3 3sge which has a lower final drive.

Ok while i'm reading this i also have a drivetrain question i have a 1991 5sfe motor that was just put into a car i bought with a brand new stage2 clutch and i have a somewhat built 1991 3sgte motor with a stage3 clutch. I'm doing a swap and don't think i need the pressure of a stage3 clutch so will the 1991 5sfe stage2 fit the 1991 3sgte tranny

Well since everyone is asking transmission questions, I will asks mine. A 3s-gte trans will bolt onto a 5s-fe.
Other than modding the axles what clutch/pressure plate combo is needed? |

The 5s clutch and PP but the disc will have to have the hub changed... the 1-1/8" 22 spline hubs fit the smaller discs fine... you can also use the disc from the older RWD celica and such with the 22R or RE engine... They had the larger hub but with the smaller 7-7/8" disc...

Any clutch shop / rebuilder should be able to swap out the hub setion for you and it shouldn't cost much...
A little over a year ago, I had two of them done for a lexus V8 project I was working on which was using a custom built twin disc using a 5s pressure plate and disc's and a local rebuilder charged me $45 to swap both of them (basically $15 for each new hub and $10 in labor to swap them). |
