5SFE Head casting differences?
I'm in need of a head for a '93 MR2 being that my current one has 3 cracks in two of the combustion chambers
. I know that the between the different years the '93 has wider buckets and wider cam lobes but do any of the numbers cast into these heads help identify them? My head has "17" cast in the middle on the intake side, "2" cast between the two intake ports, and "17 A" cast on the timing tensioner side. What years had the smaller buckets/cam lobes and which years had the wider buckets/cam lobes? I've called around to the local parts stores and looked on the internet and from what I've seen they only identify there heads as being for '91-'96 5SFEs. I would like to get an exact replacement and not end up with a head with the smaller bits. Any help would be appreciated, thx ![]() |

Just to add more info I called a shop that sells rebuilt heads last week and told the guy my situation. He said that if I want an exact replacement head that I would have to provide him with a casting number. I told him about the numbers that I've seen on my head but he said that the casting number would be longer than that.I've looked all over the head for a casting number but can't find one. Am I blind? The head is cleaned so it shouldn't be difficult to spot. Can anybody provide me with some info on this? |

1993+ (Gen 2) 5SFE heads will match yours. Only the 1990-1992 (Gen 1) heads have the smaller bits.
