i had a similiar problem and it turned out to be the alternator. although i do not know waht to say about the wire catching fire. take a look down the passenger side while someone else cranks the car and see if the alternator belt is moving or if the alternator is siezed... and dont forget the fire extinguisher!

when it ran out of gas it might have sucked the crud at the bottom of the tank and clogged your fuel filter. could also be your injectors or the fuel pump may have burnt out(i doubt this happend)

Check and replace all your ground wires. Check all wires on your alternator are secure as well. Give the battery a full charge. Change your fuel filter, never run your tank much below 1/4.

this is why i always go from the cheapest fix to the ones i have to sell my spleen. just a couple months ago i had charging issues and was already in the market for a new alternator. day of my purchase i decided to take a look at my fuses.. LOW AND BEHOLD.. there was my problem, a busted 1$ fuse.
