The Rust Monster...
See the bar in the middle of the picture? The one that extends back behind/above the underbody panel?
What is this bar and where can I get more? Left and right side are both rusted all the way through. This picture is looking forward and left from the back end of the car. The bar is about 18" long maybe and looks like it connects from just aft of the pinch welds to underneath the firewall near the centerline of the car.. thanks guys! |

It's a chassis support, and it's a commonly destroyed part. Mine are completely rusted as well. There's a member on the boards here that made their own out of steel bars to replace them, but I can't find the thread. You could try posting in the Lithia Toyota section of this forum, our sponsor dealership.

I'm guessing this is maybe one of the parts that is listed in the chassis diagram only as "STD PART" with a part number.

Yeah I noticed a bit of rust around the wheel well also, but that's a fight for another day. I'm going to head out tomorrow and pick up some pipe to fabricate replacements for these bars, shouldn't be too tough.

Cool, let us know how it goes. I'm looking into doing the same thing. I think I'll paint mine with rust resistant paint once I'm done though, hitting the pipe seems like you're going to increase surface area of the metal and remove any coating it has.

the paint is a definite must, especially seeing what happened to these supports the first time around. I'll get some new ones made and re-installed in the next few days and post some photos.
