Advancing Timing
I read through the sticky at the top of the forum "things to do when you first get your mr2 NA" and saw a bit in there that said i could crank my timing to 14 degrees. I've also heard i can do 16 degrees if i run on 93 octane.
First, what would this entail? could it cause any problems? And second, how would i go about doing this? i havent found any guides or anything online, and if it's free power i'd love to take advantage of it. Thanks |

you need a timing gun.
it has to do with moving the dizzy and checking time to the degree you want. I think the only downfall it has is that the more advance the timing is the higher the rpm at idle is. dosent go up alot but goes up. |

Hm. Can the idle be adjusted in any other way? because i think my car already idles a bit high, around like 900-1100...

900 isn't terribly high. I cranked my timing up to ridiculous levels and it idled at around 1300 (my compression is crap, so I didn't get any detonation) and then returned it back to 12. Search "high idle" on these boards, it's a popular topic of discussion.

You can idle it back down with the idle screw in the throttle body.
You don't need to have a timing light either. I just turned the distrubitor all the way back torwards the back of the car (advanced it) and brought it back just a hair towards the front. My car never spark knocked or anything like that and I only ran the low octane gas in the 5s. |

Try to see if you can find someone with a gun instead of buying one, unless you intend on setting timing frequently...

Before you go off and do this, there's a timing notch on the crank pulley. Use some liquid white out on it and let dry. This let's you see the notch with the gun, since most guns produce a bluish white light. Try to keep it in the notch for accuracy.
