Nasty High Idle=(Please Help!
(I accidently posted this in the MK1 Thread My Bad.)
My 91 MR2 NA has a nasty Idle unlike the others that have posted. Cold start is about 2500-2600rpms warmup will hang around 2000. Sometimes will drop down to 1500ish then goes right back to 2000 after a few moments. I tightened the Idle screw the whole way and I checked the Vacuum lines (Not saying there isnt a leak(To cold out to really get in there) but I didnt really see anything) I was just wondering what some other common problems could be thats causing it to act this way. And if somone has a picture of where the Vacuum lines are, could you post please? I just wanna make sure im looking at the right thing. I know my way around an engine but it never hurts to be 100%. Thanks! |

Clean your throttle body butterfly and remove your IAC and clean it up. There is a hole that sometimes gets plugged. This is usually the problem.

Is there like a step-by-step guide on how exactly to do this and what to use? because i have a similar problem, though not as severe. My car likes to idle around 2k cold and about 1300 when warmed up and if that's the solution to his problem i think it could help me too..

I agree with PHOENIX. Ive had the same problems. Its not that had to do at all. I took it apart and cleaned it with a brake cleaner type and put it back 2gether and problem solved! Its a small inlet hole on the bottom of the throttle body. It has a plug connected to the valve. Remove the valve and clean it.

I heard about it possibly being the IAC but when I went to look for it I couldnt find it. yeah I know right. Could anyone post a pic of its location? I tried to google it but it just came up with pics of it off, not the actual location of it on the throttle body.

Also I wanted to add that sense it started this High Idle The intake also sounds like a vacuum cleaner the sucking is noticably loud and only does this in idle. It stops when I give it gas. could that be linked to the IAC and if so what would be the best way to clean it?

i had the same problem at one time my car would idle at 2000 cold and 1600-1500 warm. first check for vacum leaks, clean out the throttle body/seafoam intake, and check the iac (pull the intake tube off the throttle body there is a square-ish** hole that is sucking, put ur finger over it while car is running if working properly the car should act like its dying), then you pull am2 and ecu fuses in frunk for few seconds which resets it. also check your temp guage at warm if not in the middle its not right change the thermostat i did all this and my car now idles at 1050 when warm not perfect but much better than before not saying will work for u but did for me

so I went to go clean it today disconnected everything took off the throttle body only to find there where 3 black hoses clamped to the IACV. I took pliers to each clamp and could NOT get those hoses off to save my life. I was down right ready to cut them off but there was not enough slack for me to reconnect them again after I would cut them so Idk what to do now...

the toyota clamps are excellent. theres no reason to change them. worm gear clamps damage hoses.
old hoses stick on nipples. you have to get a pick and break them free. nothing to do with clamps.

I second that! Mine are all rusty and they can be a pain to get to.
In regards to high idle, I think mine is due to a bad throttle opener. I got a new one on, but I was running late so I didn't get a chance to turn on the car. Mine was idling at about 2500 rpms, and then will settle down to 1300-1500 which is similar symptom when the throttle opener is bad. |
