Another poor gas mileage thread...

Hey guys i recently had a "new" 5sfe swapped into my 2. the gas mileage sucks and my exhaust smells horrible. yesterday i placed a rag infront of one of the exhaust tips and had a friend hit the throttle. the rag had a ton of black residue on it... what could be the cause????

That means that you're running super rich. Did you replace the ignition stuff (plugs, wires, cap and rotor) before putting the engine in?

Have you checked the timing? You should be running at 10* BTDC.

How is it idling? Smoothly or jumping around?

at idle it jumps around but under acceleration its fine.... plugs and wires were changed but not the distributor or the cap.

Visual inspection of the inside of the cap and the tip on the rotor will tell you if that needs to be replaced. A failed O2 sensor can also create the symptoms you're seeing.

Leaky vacuum hoses can cause the idle to jump around. Probably not the poor fuel mileage though.

Gairloch is right you running way too rich, check you 02,visually check the ecu if it been damage or tampered,I had the same situation I found out my ecu had been tampered.

check your all of your emission components, you might have the wrong or fouled plugs.Go back to whoever did your swap the should be able to fix it or have some kind of warranty.

Too rich

In addition to the o2 sensor, check your fuel pressure regulator, make sure it has a good solid vacuum line connected.
