Alt belt squealing like a madman
Drove in the pouring rain today... and my alt belt wouldn't STFU.
First my voltage gauge would drop, then the belt would SCREAM for about 1-2 seconds and then stop. On the highway this happend once about every 1/2 a mile. Got off and losened the belt, don't know if that helped. I don't have my under-motor plastic covers on. Could that be a problem? |

Mine used to make noise after washing the car. I replaced the belt and tightened it to spec. Those belts are so cheap you might as well just get a new one. If its tightened to spec...I don't think it should squeal unless you're in a puddle or something.

When I swapped my motor, I didn't change the harmonic resonator on the block, so the ribs were off on the alt belt because the motor I installed came out of a Celica... so I've gone through a lot of belts getting it right. This belt has less than 5K miles on it, and is installed correctly, and tightened to spec.

If everything is good with the belt and its tightened to spec I don't see why it would squeel... Does it do it when its not raining?

The belt is brand new.
It only squeels in the rain. |

Well then it must be getting wet somehow.... Is your hood free from any junk? I'm not all that sure that the little guard at the bottom would keep rain out but maybe that's the problem.

It's getting wet, because I don't have my underpanels on under my engine.

My alternator belt use to squeel a lot on my NA. When i got my turbo, i let my NA sit for a week or so then went to start it and my alternator had seized up. Snapped the belt right off and im still in the process of replacing my alternator. So, id say that if everything is to spec, and youre SURE of that, then maybe your alternator is about to go? Just an idea. Good luck! |

IF your belt is squealing or making noise its prematurely wearing. It WILL eventually die. All you guys with squeaky belts need to just replace the belt.
Tightening the belt might fix it, but depending on how long its been doing it for, you may have already shortened the belt life. Just replace it. The belt is like 8 bux from napa. (IIRC) |

I've been having issues with belt squeal myself on start up. I'm going to replace both my AC and alternator belts. I just hope to god it's not the timing belt or any related hardware.

Can anyone that's experienced what he's talking about corroborate this? Seems pretty unlikely to me. |

Yeah... I've never had water on top of my engine.
I've got another belt in my trunk... I'll just hope it doesn't snap on some pouring wet day... |

Replacing the Alt belt is a chore if you ask me. Most people have told me it takes about an hour but it took me 3 hours or so. Its a pain in the ***
