Yeah, I love my MR2. I bought it new in the fall of 1990 and used it as a daily driver for 12 years. Over the 17 years I've owned it, I've averaged over 30 MPG. It was a great commuter and like others have mentioned, the insurance was much cheaper than the turbo. It handles as well as the turbo and is much easier to maintain. It's a garage queen now with 128,000 miles and I drive it less than 300-400 miles a year. I put the 94+ tails on it four years ago when I had it repainted. It still turns heads and there are darn few 17 year old cars that can do that.

Yes! It's fun! Although the rusted bolts reduce the fun quotient when updating things.

Darn road salt! Replace as many bolts underneath as you can and treat the lower edges. It can survive.

I have never driven the Turbo MR2 not to mention I have NEVER even seen one on the road driving anywhere. The car is really rare nowadays depending on where you live.
Non-turbo's are great for RELIABILITY and AFFORDABILITY. Someone who can buy a newer car does not even comprehend how satisfying it is to have a car that looks like an older Ferrari for the price of $1800 cash. If you can find one and it has maintenance records you should get it. Being slower actually helps you become a more precise shifter and overall better driver. I don't go picking on cars to race but I hold my own most of the time and if I lose or get dusted by a superior car I always remember I should not race anyway (lol)> .Non-turbo's are still fun to drive and with some 17" or 18" inch rims they can look a lot newer than a 15-16 year old car usually can. I still get admiring glances and still have the stock 14's on mine. I can't wait until I get rims. This is definitely one fun car to have owned at least once in your lifetime whether Turbo or not. ![]() |

Hats off to you GR8MR2 -that's stunning.
The rev 1/2 spoilers still give it the best profile in my opinion out of every other option out there. |

I absolutely love my 3S-GE NA, but if I'm honest it needs a bit more power so I'm having the engine swapped out and replaced with a 3.0 V6 (3VZ-FE) early next year...still NA though.

I love having off the line torque, so I wanna make my N/A an S/C soon. A V-6 would be better, but I dont have the technical skills to do that as it looks drastically harder than the GZE swap.

Like it, but wish the gearing were higher! I want a turbo tranny in it. Maybe a 5SFTE conversion too.

I have one friend with a 350ci z28, one who owned a Dodge Stealth NA, and one who owns a BMW 328. After giving them a ride in the car, they think I'm nuts for thinking I need another 70hp. LOL
5SFE does it for me (for now!) ![]() Although the power band leaves a lot to be desired (not much power beyond 5200 RPMs). |

I can see wanting a taller 5th gear to bring the cruise RPMs down but if you're talking aout the final drive and/or the rest of the gearset, imo that would make it sluggish.

In regards to cruising RPM, what do you guys with N/A usually hit when your going 60 or 70 in 5th gear? My car sits about 3,5000-3,700 which to me feels a little high for cruising speed. Maybe its just a N/A thing so that is why I'm asking I haven't had my car for long.

I forget exactly, but I remember typical highway cruising RPM was around 4000rpm. The MR2 has rather short gears, especially the NA.
