all in all.. modding a 5sfe just makes it more fun, or a little more uselful to drive. im more concerned about my driving skill and suspension setup, and ive always felt thats what limits my goals, not the motor. its a GREAT motor for beating up on mountain roads, or autoxing.. once its freshened up, it never really breaks, and theres not many components to break anyways.. with a few cheesy mods it'll actually move decently and has a wide band.
the 5sfe isnt the best motor, or the fastest motor, or the biggest power maker, but its decent and depending on what you want out of your car, it can most definately get the job done. |

^^ hear hear!
I think the NA MR2 is a great option for someone into performance driving that wants to tighten down the nut behind the wheel. Can't use your right foot to get you out of trouble ![]() |

Please, I don't want anyone to take this as a dis to Tyler, but I just have to have some fun with this quote: Quote:
My feeling is that by putting an econo-lump v6 into an MR2 we really are putting a pig in a nightgown. And when we spice up the suspension and add some sticky tires, it does dance. Interestingly, this is the same heritage that produced the first sports cars. |

^^ very well said...
its true...its how the owner wants thier car to run and what they want to do to it to run that way. I love N/A and S/C vehicles...so i am putting a 5vz in my engien and going to invest LOTS of money in making a amazing N/A engine over the next year. Is it the best bang for buck? No...will it be fun...hells yea! |

Wow, vacation was nuts. I come back to read this and it got pretty strange. I found a place that will make the rods and pistons at $160 each. along with rings. I have found a few sites that have cams, any suggestions on what is a reliable cam producer/modifier? I am going all out. Its not the idea of being a record setter - to me its the idea of having something with forced induction that isn't the typical turbo setup. Even the Rippmodds set up isn't what I am shooting for. You guys answered the origional question. They said that it could not be done. Good info here. Strange but good. I guess my mentality is that its a low RPM powerplant. Why not use a lower band blower to assist in the system.

I found a place that I am going to do a base run on the dyno Wednesday. I was speaking of the issues of how hard it was to find cams and things. He said if I could get him a 5sfe (to him in Charlotte, NC) that he'd love to work on some. They have a full CNC machine shop and can make just about anything. Let me know if anyone has one or kows where I can get a cheap one for them to use.

^that would be cool, an alternative cam source would be great as well as some dyno runs.
Keep us up to date. |

Gairloch is working with me to get one together. I'll talk with the shop and see if I can get a time frame once I get a head. I don't wanna pay for the bench time, but if I can find out how many might be interested in a pre-order they might do it for themselves.

i have a head with 3 ports smoothed and pretty reworked.. the last port is just smoothed, but totally stock shaped (damn short side radius is nasty! im sure thats where power is). i gotta find a local place to get some flow bench numbers, with velocity. having installed 2 ported heads, im sure it makes a difference, i just need concrete evidence

The shop at SpeedInnovations in Concord, NC has one. They mostly work on some fast *** honda's...and he's got the trophies to show for it, but he is going to look into diging into the 5sfe head once we get one.

Ive got a 5sfe head I'd send to you for free, just pay the shipping. I can send just the head, no cams, not buckets but it will have valves and springs.

If you did all this work to a 3sgte, youd probably have 200+ more whp on the dyno in the end. And I am Not criticizing you for doing this, its just something to think about, as the 5sfe powered MR2's tend to be excellent on the autox courses, over a turbo model, or even more so than if you instead had a modified laggy 400whp, 2650lb NA to T mr2
