The 91/92 mkIIs are notorious for this problem. It is the synchros that are bad. This ofcourse causes wear on both the clutch and tranny. I've got the same problem with 3rd gear every now and then. I can not downshift to 3rd without grinding as well. I've had this problem ever since I bought it in 1999, but I haven't replaced the clutch or tranny so far. It is just something you'll have to deal with until you replace the tranny. Try draining your tranny fluid and make a half and hlaf mix of the standard oem recommended fluid with some synchromesh. This may help a bit.

i've read that a guy opened up his tranny and replaced the synchros, fixing the problem. But yes, after all the wear and tear, you most likely will have to get a new clutch.

Eventually you'll have to get the trans rebuilt with new synchros, at which time you might as well replace the clutch because the trans will be out and it's convenient.

In the meantime, you can try replacing the trans fluid with Redline MT90 or other really good manual trans fluid. Most everyone who does that notes a big improvement.

same thing with mine, i changed out my fluid with pennzoil synchromesh and the problem went away.

It technically didn't fix it, it just hid the problem till i can get around to actually fixing it which is new synchros.
